Some weeks ago i heard of 1949 split vert that is in a car colection for over 20 years - so i tracked the car down and went to the guy and made some pics of this rare car
Here are some details : buid 23 November 1949, Chassis 1-0130682 Bodynumber 15-00225
So you see - there are still rare cars out there that just want to be found

That makes it the third oldest Type 15 still existing, pretty rare though
Congratulations for 'finding' it Christian, and thanks for sharing the pictures with us...!

That is a carpet flap over the tranny "trap door". I have never seen that before but it makes a lot of sense. Has anyone seen that before? trap door ended in '51 (late) I think. But all of the pics I have seen of deluxes had solid carpet over it. _________________ John Henry

Yeah John, being fully carpeted over has never made much sense to me. When I pulled the carpet up on my zwitter, I found that a PO had cut the shelf out and put a piano hinge on it. Luckily the cut out portion was there. But again it was completely carpeted and not that easily accessed. Must be they had had starter issues at some point and thought it was a good idea.

Even the standards had a fiber board over that area. I think the idea was starter access, and access to the tranny oil fill plug. But it is just stupid to have to pull all that board/carpet out to use the door... _________________ John Henry

Great find Christian! You are living every VW nuts' dream!
I guess 1949 is to young to be of any interest to you?
Any more history on the car? Old pics, documents? |

Awesome find...I have a few questions.
What turn signals are on top of the fenders?
Why do the fenders have round and oval grilles? _________________ 1957 Beetle

The carpet flap you can find on early export split beetles, i think until the end of 1950. The trap door ended in september 1952. So the last split window beetles and the zwitter have no trap door.
As i remember claus missing build also a carpet flap in his cabrio. Maybe it was original till 1952? |

Hello,
yes we bought/ tradet the car for our museum. The old owner ( you can see him on pic poseing for the last time ) wanted this rare piece in a good home and so we did a trade deal . He also has a small museum and we both have someting what we wanted for our collections !
I looked at the car for the fist time on the 22.12 and the next day i picked up the car - so it really was an early christmas gift !
When the time has come we will restaure this rare piece - at the moment i just want to get it driveing and then drive to some shows 2010 just like it is ( see how much fun oval56 has )
Christian
PS Peter we will keep our 50 we now have a split vert fom 1949, 1950 and 1952
