installing inner door handle with new paneling

Another question. I just put new paneling on the inner driver door but having a hard time putting the spring, collar, door handle and pin on. Do you cut a hole the size of the plastic collar so that you can push the collar in far enough so that you have access for the pin to lock in place? Can you tell me how its done. I'd be much appreciated.

The spring goes behind the door panel, then the collar and then the handle. push the panel and the collar toward the outside of the door put the handle on and push the pin through.

It can be a pain at times.

Don't cut the hole bigger. The spring goes over the handle shaft between the door and panel. Big end to the panel. Collar goes over the shaft on the finished side of the panel. Press hard to compress the spring behind the panel. Start the pin into the handle just enough to hold it but not interfere with the splines. Press it all together until the pin lines up with the slot. Use a small drift or finish nail to set the pin.
Later flipper style handles use a screw instead of the pin. Doesn't look as cool, but fewer swear words.

Working alone (without an extra pair of stockinged feet or a third hand) I’ve had some success using a spring loaded “push & pop” punch to drive the handle pins in while strong arming the panel with the other hand. Something like this

After a near miss of almost ripping the panel (thank goodness for a bit of just in case protective tape) I decided to file one end of the remaining pins flat and put pop dents in the center of those ends before setting the other three handles. It takes a few careful pops to drive the pins but worked like a charm. And I didn’t even swear once.
