It has been a while since I posted here on our Official TOOB thread. I got this vintage Fram oil filter that I have been toying with the idea of installing the same. With a very busy schedule, work, family, biking and running and other weekend family getaways, I never had the chance to install it. Fortunately, I had the time last weekend and I installed it.

First, of course, removing all the necessary parts is a must. The game plan was to install the return of the oil onto the small covered hole on the base of the generator stand. Vintage Speed Theme.

Removing the parts is quite easy.

These are the parts that I gathered for the installation of the Fram. The elbow fittings came in handy. I bought the hoses that looked the same from the original used for the Vintage Speed Theme.

Measuring the diameter of the thread to select the correct tap to be used.

I used a drill bit that is as small as the hole in the fitting and drilled the base of the generator stand. As can be shown in this photo, the holes on both the fitting and the stands are quite the same size.

This procedure was quite tricky. the alignment of the tap should be proper so that the leading edge of the thread would to skip a beat. But, once it scrapped the outer portion of the hole, the thread went in smoothly.

Before inspecting the Fram, I looked for a place where I would place it. And the bracket near the left card was the perfect place.

Since, the Fram was a NOS one, it looked pretty clean inside.

I poured some considerable amount of oil into the Fram so that once the engine stars running, there won't be some unwanted air that would interrupt the continuous flow of the oil.

The filter was in great shape despite its age. I looks pretty okay to me.

The cap and the the o-ring are still in tip-top shape.

Of course, this sealing material will guaranty a leak-free operation of the Fram filter.

These brackets came in handy and it simplified the installation. The brackets are kept away from prying eyes too.

First in to be installed was the elbow fitting onto the base of the generator stand and then next was the flexible hose.

The "Y" fitting was essential to accommodate the hose going to the Fram and the needed oil pressure sending unit.

Installing the Fram was quite tiring, but it fits well. The hoses and fittings were secured at this point.

The Frams Oil Filter is now installed. The engine is running on this picture. I checked everything and it was working property.

Thanks, buddy Jason. O got it from vintage store in Manila. It's a universal fuel filter!

Thanks

In about 2005 I had a chance to get a VW Bus . I think it was a late air cooled model , I'm not sure . All the Buses I've even known of were close to new when I was in my 20's .

It was a Calif one and it great shape and a used car trade in . the only thing I saw was it was on a hoist where I worked as a Service Adviser , was part of the front suspension that had to do with steering was torn loose . I forget if it was welded to the body right side or the frame.

They would not sell it to me.

I had a 66 bug and a 68 Ghia rag top and now this 73 SB.

I always liked the Buses best because they had room enough for anything I would need to haul.

Back in 1960 my father a custom home builder wanted a van instead of this 56 Chevy Stake bed truck . Back then you could get all the details from a dealer supplied in a color catalog .

He had the Corvair van one and the VW one and the Ford one. Might have had a Chevy one yet I don't think chevy had a van in 61.

He chose the 61 Ford Econoline van because the floor was level front to rear.

74-75 westfalia in white are the hardest color combo to find! That's looking sweet. Do you have anymore pics and specs?

It is bone stock, unrestored (just the way I like them) with 1 respray. Factory A/C model, missing under the dash controls/fans. Other than missing the child hammock, mosquito net and the stove, it is complete and very solid. Almost zero rust. Engine smokes,(gonna do a top end) replace balljoints, tierod ends/draglink. Then I'm gonna use the shit out of it. Will send more pics when I get around to it.

Original spare tire is in the rear closet. I haven't tore into it 100%. Would the pump be in there too?

Chip,

You are looking for this Coleman pump and lit. The spare typically went on the bottom of the cabinet with the sink and was a special collapsible spare.

Look at the 74 link in my sig to see my 74.

No compressor. What are you using for a hinge(s) on the small fold out table on the refrigerator cabinet? Mine is broke too. Would like something small, preferably that mounts to the factory holes.

Chip, I was able to find metal hinges that fit the holes at home depot. Got rid of those plastic ones. Lots of your missing or broken bits can be found at Bus Depot. Ive been able to replace lots of things through them.

You can find a replacement air pump as Coleman made lots of them - trick is finding the elusive correct VW/Coleman blue one. If you cant - then I suggest getting any Coleman Inflate All that you can find on eBay or Craig's list.

My latest TOOB venture. Finishing up all the little things on the 77 - years of prep to get her where I want her. The new motor and hitch are only a few things - working on getting the BN4 in now.

Headlight washers... cool! Now you need the little wipers.

I have been slowly picking away at bringing the Motel Berlin back from a long sleep... parked in October 2011. Hopefully next year I'll be back in the TOOB saddle. Laughing

Maybe they never had 'em. I have been hunting for a set of the elusive Benz ones for my '68 W111 230S that finally threw a rod and is going to become a homemade air suspended W112 300SE 3.5... someday... Surprised

Ive been mostly working on the 64 notch and buying stuff. Work is busy this time of year for me so my motivation to paly with VW stuff is low.

Lots of cool ad ons for the notch - but this one does not look right Think

Ive had a couple visors for T3s. Even a real - old one before the repops. See how this sits so high? Big hoopy looking thing? I think its for a bay!

What do you think?
