I am going to attempt to plug away steadily at this project.
Right now I am taking inventory of what I have VS what I need.
I freely admit that I am down a bunny hole right now gather Air Conditioning information. I've even ordered the engine mounting for the Compressor.
I've also been evaluating my convertible top mechanism so I have an idea of the work needed and the funds needed to restore the system.
I am thrilled to find that I have virtually all of the components for the top.
I am lacking....
Left Top Latch and Sunvisor assembly
Right Top Latch and Sunvisor assembly
The hold down hooks I have the chrome mounting brackets (what do these do?)
A few rubber seals are missing
The seal and seam covers by the hinges
Both interior hinge covers are missing.
Then of course the entire top, cables, front header, padding and headliner are needed.
The rear bow still has the wood and appears to be useable.
My very first task on the body repair will be to get the unit cleaned up and into the garage.
position the body so the doors work perfectly and build door braces for both sides.
Obviously I'll be grafting the rear of the convertible onto the front of the Coupe.

I appreciate your interest and especially your effort!
Sadly I've not the funds right now to pursue another Ghia.
While the pictures I post to some look like a come to life horror show, I'm actually having a blast!
This is like a giant Tetris game where you've got to twist and turn and fit pieces together to make a whole.
I was just out at the Convertible frame exploring and melting away pewter exposing the seam between the windshield frame and the body.
It is truly fascinating how it all joins together.
You see, even though I may be joining a convertible rear with a coupe front, I am going to take pains to make sure that the windshield frame is a LEAST as strong as the OEM assembly procedure.
I started this thread about the Convertible Windshield frame and how it differs from the coupe years ago.
My knowledge is increasing as I open more of the car up so I'll be fleshing it out more.......

I was examining my Coupe for donor parts for the inner wheel wells, storage area floor and body to chassis mount points.
Here are my coupe rear mount panels.......
And the Convertible...
A simple cut and paste procedure. 😂

I'll be watching you storage area replacement with interest since I have to do the same on my 70 Vert. I am fortunate enough that the PO included a replacement with the car. Great work and inspiration. Thanks for sharing. _________________

Excitement last night! ( Yeah..... my life IS that pitiful......)
I've been puzzling out what body parts are direct exchanges from the Coupe to the Convertible.
The luggage floor and inner wheel wells are #1 on the list!
I struck up a conversation with user "nodents" who has copies of an original VW Ghia parts section.
He was kind enough to email me some bits of it with part numbers that clearly show that the area in question is clearly the same part for the Coupe and Convertible!
many Many MANY thanks to him for his willingness to help!!!
I can now plan on my cut points knowing what bits are the same!!
I am SO excited about having this knowledge!
Here is a good photo of the diagram he sent.... hope he doesn't mind....
I've seen this diagram in various places but never as clear and with the part numbers. (Which I did not post)
Item #35 caused some head scratching last night.
For the life of me I could not remember seeing a panel like that on my clip.
So, well after dark Ingrabbed my Flashlight (Torch for you people across the pond) nd ran out to the car in my Pj's.
Nope, no panel like that......
Went back inside, looked again at the part number listing and saw this........
I've got a 70, that part is UP TO a late 1968 chassis number!
My chassis on my 69 is 149-250029 so it will NEVER be a real 69 1/2 convertible no matter how much I wanted to try!

Because I'm curious about things.......
I know a new right rear 1/4 panel was put on years ago. The panel still has the part number sticker on it!
There was a shadow of body putty running from the Right Rear window to the engine lid corner......
I wondered what kind of a quality job was done making the repair many years ago?
I once again pulled out my torch, putty knife and wire brush and went to work!
No Pewter this time, all plastic that softened quickly and scraped off easily....
I was rather hoping for lead...... silly me!
As I scraped the putty it was quite rusty under it.
I know putty absorbs moisture but........
It turns out that the panel was stitch welded on. A very good technique for welding metal seams without warping the panels.
When you stitch weld, it is a series of welds an inch or so long, skip a distance do it again, like lines on a highway in a passing zone. Doing this spreads out the heat and helps keep things cool.
The proper method is to go back and fill in the dashes between the stitch welds creating one long continuous weld.
This guys didn't !
One series of stitches and they called it good!
That left gaps which allowed moisture to enter and soak the bottom of the putty!!!
IDIOTS!!!!!

I also am finding this project somewhat freeing.
As a rule when I bring back an old VW I bring it back to stock condition.
This project however will never be "as it was". It will have some "odd" structural members, will be made from two cars, and I've no concerns about making it perfect.
Factory colors, factory trim, factory interior........ not a concern.
Does it look good, is it a joy to drive and is it comfortable?
If the answers are Yes, Yes and Yes! ........ I will have succeeded.
