Anyway, if you open a can and get a DROP on the lid seal and then reseal the can, that can will never open again!

Thin shmear of bearing grease on the lip of the lid solves that. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I'll be making similar repairs underneath my back seat. Those dang leaky windows
Interested as to what you're using to replace the rubbers between the structural ribs and the nose, as those are on my list. _________________ "He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac ‘cause he doesn’t like it looking like he looks back"

I'm sure you are wondering...... "Hey Dave! What's happening on tgat Ghia?"
Answer...... in the past 10 days I have either prepared for a Nor'easter, plowed during a Nor'easter or cleaned up after a Nor'easter.
12"
18"
5"
Maybe once the Ghia reappears, I'll work on it.
BTW...... snow removal is hard work!
Dave |
We got snow too, it was gone in 3-4 hours.

Yes, it has been quite the March, it came in like an angry Lion!
While the Ghia has been covered with snow and the temperatures are brutally cold and windy....... I've kept busy.
I've figured out how the 1969 - 74 four way flashers and also the turn signals work. This was a brain teaser and a mental exercise...... but also a lot of fun....... I really do need a life.....
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=695919
While I have a complete 69 Coupe, my 70 Convertible bits are lacking.
I've got the Convertible basics but it is missing many of the various finishing bits.
Once I identify what items belong but are missing I've been picking up used OG parts here in the classifieds.
I won't need them for awhile, but if I pick them up now, early...... I will be good to go when the day comes.
I've come to realize that my 69 wiring harness is tired.
Many of the terminal ends have seen many heat/cool cycles and simply crumble when I touch them,
I need to remove the entire harness soon....... whole.
While it is out I plan on using my ohm meter to test each wire, visually check for dry and cracked insulation and replace every crimped on wire end with new German style ends.
To this end I've contacted my Vanagon electric guy, Jay..... thatvwbusguy.....
[email protected]
He knows old VW's, he provides nothing but top notch product at fair prices and he is as honest as the day is long.
I'll get all new ends, a pair of ratcheting crimpers, ceramic headlamp plugs and a headlamp relay kit.
Why the relays? I plan on putting in some bright 21st headlamp lighting and don't want to overload the old light control wires.
I have an 86 Vanagon wiring harness so any wires I need I can harvest from it.
I may also add a few wires into the loom for my Air Conditioning and a few more interior lights (footwell, rear luggage area, front luggage area and engine area) with a switch to control them. The switch will probably be a repurposed rear window defogger switch under the dash..... ignition on only.
I'll keep my vintage radio but will wire in a hidden Bluetooth audio unit and speakers to stream music and have hands free telephone.
I did this in my 74 Beetle Super Vert.
A few charging ports would be nice to have also.
Subtlety (Subtly?) drag the old girl into the 21st Century.

Request for information from a fellow 1070 convertible owner.
Is it possible for you to post a few close up shots of the rocker pannel/heater channel cross section in the picture below minus the sill plate? I am getting ready to surgically remove the the outer rocker skin and and would like to know if I need to drill the spot welds at the inner edge of the skin or if I can get away with removing the welds along the outer edge. My heater channels are solid but I have a few holes in the rocker skins so I may as well inspect and treat the interiors while I address the damage.
PM me if I need to do a better job of describing what I am after so I don't pollute your thread.
Here is a reference photo. "Inner edge" is top row of welds in the picture.

Title should read "My '69 Ghia..... interrupted by Nor'easter round 85!"
You're project has been more effective at producing snow than Native Americans could make rain by their rain dance. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Yeah, I LOVE snow but 12-18" of snow for the first day of Spring Added to the already fallen 35" total of snow for March is tiring even for me. ... |
Yeah, I feel for you.
I can remember way back when the Chicago area used to get a lot of snow in Winter.
I think I prefer the new kind of Winter we've been having here for a few years now, though - significant snow storms perhaps 2 or 3 times total all season, with plenty of above-freezing temps inbetween to make certain the accumulation doesn't stick around very long.

... Plus our house in Pennsylvania is getting this storm too! Maybe my Son-in-law will go over and shovel for me?
HA!! He's a Millennial! What am I thinking?!?!
Is there an App for that?
Dave |
I've discovered with my own young adult son that no app is required - you just have to frame the snow removal task with the correct adjectives.
"Want to get some serious cardio in today without having to go all the way over to the gym?" gets results where "Get your ass out of bed and go shovel the sidewalk and driveway" never did! |

Let's figure out what to do here ..... junk it it NOT an answer!
Front trunk......
Rust on both corners near or at the drain tube holes.
This is little more than cleaning up the rust and building upmthe area with weld.....
Looking down into the spare tire well you can see the common rust areas, again caused by those horrible rubber seals!!! What were they thinking????!!!??
I know the rockers are rusty, that's no big surprise at all.
Here is the seam below and behind the left door......
Looking up at the seam onnthe bottom of the rlockers where the multiple pieces join to make the support box......
Oh my poor Left Rear Fender!
It has been aggressively attacked by cancer. I've got mostbof the repop panels I need but some portions are rusty above the repops. The rust extends to within an inch of the tail light bottom.
Here is where the left engine compartment tin meets the body below the tail light. That cursed rubber seal that Karmann loves so much promoted rust here too! I'll be replacing those expensive rubber seals with a modern product out of a tube!
Surprisingly the holes for the side marker are in almost perfect shape! Go figure..... I don't like those garish round reflector/lights? So they willmbe welded up and done away with.....
