|
|
We were heading up to Orlando for Xmas last Thursday on the Turnpike. Traffic was heavier than normal but moving. I had the cruise set on 70mph riding the right lane. I could see a slower moving vehicle ahead and turned on my signal to indicate a lane change. The first two vehicles in the left lane did not offer any space up. The third was a VW Tiquan or Tourag. They actually sped up so that I could not get into the left lane. I expect this behavior from most, but a VW owner? That is disappointing. Oh and 400 miles round trip not one Vanagon on the road. _________________ ☮️ |

On behalf of all vw owners, you included, let me say that I am embarrassed and ashamed of us for this incident. It should not have happened. We apologize. |

I too would like to apologize for this violation of the brotherhood.
I have spoken to the owner of the Tourag about their poor behavior. I have confiscated their keys and suspended their VW club membership for 30 days.
I explained to them that if they have another violation within the following 365 days we will revoke all VW ownership privileges.

I do not understand why you are suprised.
while many of us with Classic VWs still own/drive NEW VWs
not that many of NEW VW owners drive/own/or even recognize Classis VWs.
I blame those who have in the past placed a "honk if anything falls off" bumper sticker to undermining our already sketchy societal(sp?) reputation

Yep...thats what i would have done. In mexico your lucky if you get a blinker. Most times they just come on over.
The folks in the nice cars will let you in if they dont want to wreck.
Just fire out there and blend in...... _________________ 89 Bostig powered syncro westy |

No, you turn on your signal as you are changing lanes. That way Johnny Law can't give you a ticket. |

I get waves once and awhile in my splitty form new v-dubbers, when in my vanagon I pretty much only get waves from people in baywindows or other vanagons. |

No soul, No class, No taste, No manners, nobody I ever want to know.
Truthfully I don't know anyone who calls themselves a VW lover/purist that would buy a Caravan with a VW badge on it.
have any of you looked in the motor compartment of a new VW van/mini van? I've been working VW/Audi for many many many years, Nothing in that motor compartment looks familiar. I didn't see the hamster wheel either.

I doubt your speedometer is accurate. And I bet the cars you tried to cut off were going 10mph faster than your Van.
You are a danger to self and others when you expect traffic to slow down for you to change lanes.
If you cant run with the big dogs, stay in the slow lane. |

I spent three weeks in Australia this fall (in a rather tired 2002 Toyota HiAce Camper...oooo, I feel dirty...with 400K on the clock) and the difference between driving there and here (especially in New Mexico where traffic "laws" are merely viewed as suggestions to most drivers) was amazing.
In Oz you are required by law to acknowledge and drop back when a car in an adjacent lane turns on its signal (and they do signal). If you don't, you risk a ticket from the very polite officer, mate. A pedestrian stepping into a zebra-striped cross walk? You WILL stop. And since it's Australia and the pedestrians know you WILL stop, they don't even bother to look before stepping out into traffic. They know you won't kill them, unless you're a Yank still trying to get used to driving on the "other" side of the road.
They have a graduated licensing system with an "L" (Learner), a "P" (Provisional) and a "P1" (more skills) attached to your car so you know who to look out for (I suggested to an Aussie friend they also needed a "Y" for "Yank" who thought it was a good idea after he took me out for a couple of practice drives on the left side my first days there). And they vigorously enforce DUI laws, no exceptions.
Aside from driving in Sydney (which is another story) driving in Oz felt, for lack of a better word, "sane." Here in the the US driving is based, like the shipping industry, on Tonnage Rules. Here I drive as if every other person on the road is my brother-in-law.
So I'm not surprised, rsxsr, that you were hogged by a VW. In this country it's just another car with just another American driver who thinks his balls are bigger than yours. _________________ 1984 Westy with tencentlife power! |

My 82 aircooled Vanagon would do 75 on relatively flat ground and no head wind. Actually was passed by a highway patrolman who paced me for a minute, looked over, shook his head and waved (speed limit was 65). I think he was impressed that it was going this fast. Of course, caveat was that I was 19 and stupid. Never ran any of my subsequent vans that fast (although it was a sheer act of providence I never blew that engine). 65 is the limit for me in any older aircooled. |

Sorry, GPS verified, 1.9 TDI, 4.14 ring and pinion. .77 4th with P215/65R-16 . 2900 rpm at 70 mph. Do the math. Plenty left, but the speed limit is 70 mph and it was christmas eve. You have your type A personalities and type B. Seems we have both on the Samba as well. Happy New Year to all my fellow Type B members. _________________ ☮️ |
