Where can I get my hands on an exploded parts diagram manual like the one that Russ uses in posts all the time? Is this being reprdoced? Is it on this site somewhere & I just cannot find it? Is it available for download on a PDF somwhere? Any help would be awesome as illustrations like these help me figure out how things work.
Thanks

Keep a look out in the Classifieds Section for Type 3's........... although these Parts Books don't come up every day, they sometimes pop up for sale. There's the ultra-rare early type 3 parts manual (1961/1962), then there's a Nov. 1963, and besides the supplements, I think a new version came out in 1968, and again in 1972. Try to get a 1968 if you have an early type 3, or the 1972 version if your type 3 is 1968 or later. _________________ '64 1500 'S' with sunroof

OK, just snapped some quick pics. Here are all three of them together:
Here is the 1961. Dated September 1961:
Here is the 1965, dated August 1965:
And here is the 1969, dated August 1969:

The last supplement for the T-3's was Supplement #10, printed in 1972. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Not everything is up on my site. Due to copyright restrictions.
I just post pages as needed, and I do have all of the parts illustrations posted.

If I tried to post the entire manual on my web site, it would be a forever job.
Look at the thickness of the manual pictures that notchback posted. Imagine that ever page is double sided. That is a lot of pages.
The last parts book I scanned ended up being a 42 megabyte file. A little hard to upload 4 megs at a time.
And like I said, then there are the copyright considerations.
I do not want to incure the wrath of the VWoA lawyers. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

At this point, I am sure, most of that stuff is public domain. For instance, the book from 1961, the copyright expired in 1992, unless VW extended it. I highly doubt that they did. By 1992, VW had stopped caring about aircooled VWs.
It would be a serious undertaking to scan all of those books. _________________ Phillip Bradfield

I already do have them scanned.
I have a scanner with an automatic document feeder, that does double sided.
Also use Adobe Acrobat Pro to do the scanning. It takes them right in as a PDF file. It will scan about 15 pages a minute, both sides. I just have to watch that it does not jam. It does not like fan fold pages.
It was not a cheap scanner, but worth the money. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I guess you are saying 30 years? I think you mean 28, which would be true for a '61 parts book (I think) but not anything published after 1963. If anyone know with certainty, I'd like some confirmation. _________________ How to Post Photos

I have a semi-thin (about 1/2" thick) paper back parts book here, that was printed in Germany 9/1993 from VWAG. It has all the pics that Russ has posted, but no part numbers for said parts. It also has multi-language order forms in the front (on blue pages). So, I would think VW still has a hand in some of what is out there as far as printed material. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yup, 28 years, for anything copyrighted up to 1964. I am not an attorney, but I work with those bastards everyday. _________________ Phillip Bradfield

Their lawyers may not have. It's cheap to renew a patent and could possibly generate revenue. _________________ 71 Squareback

I've been doing some searching but we won't be able to to tell for sure if Volkswagen ever officially filed copyrights on the parts books or the workshop bulletins. If they did, I don't think they didn't renew them after 1978.
Prior to 1978 works had a copyright of 28 years and could be renewed which pushed it out to 95 years. In 1978 (and since this was published by a corporation) it became 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first.
For some odd reason you can't link to a copyright directly as each search is in a timed session and doesn't link directly... anyway, the search url is http://cocatalog.loc.gov/ To find the examples below at that link click on 'Other Search Options' and leave the options as is so it searches everything.
You can't search pre-78 copyrights on the US Copyright Office website but here's an example (search: TX0000429618) of a book originally published in 1974, but renewed in 1979. Here's a couple updated T2 bentleys: 1978 TX0000086833 and then again in 1979 TX0000262589.
If someone felt so inclined they could hire a researcher from the copyright office to find the copyright info behind the parts books but I have no idea how much that costs. _________________ 71 Squareback

Some good copyright info here: http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm
I'm pretty sure that 1961 manual is in the public domain.
The post 1964 manuals are probably still under copyright, technically. 95 years from the copyright date is the expiration, I believe. Will any 1969 Type 3s exist in 2064??? _________________ Phillip Bradfield
