I actually looked at that one!!
Then I ended up flying to Oregon for the Holidays and poof! IT was gone.
Glad it went to a good home!! It's looking good!

Great News!..Took the old gal out for her first road test since I got her back together. First to the neighbors for a tow strap incase something went wrong, then to the gas station....then put about 90 miles on. Ran great, sounded good, nothing fell off or leaking......I'm happy! Very Happy I'll say this...since its my first with a 36 HP and split case trans......very loud in first gear......and not a lot of go. With me, my son, a floor jack and an assortment of tools....we managed along on the highway at 70 - 73 without any issue.....but you know when you come to a hill.

Still need to get the front bumper on and strap the battery down...But I had to get it on the road and see what would happen.
Good to have one back driveable again

Yeah I know that feeling. My first ever bug was a 64 that the PO had decided wanted to keep the 40hp that was in it so I got it for a very good price. Since the front end had been wrecked I got it real cheap - $150 IIRC. The 36 was pretty tired but ran like a trooper. It could manage 60mph but didn't have much more to give. That was the only 36 I ever owned but I'll never forget the sound of that engine. I can pick out a 25/36hp engine on sound alone when they accelerate.

First thing I did was find a 1600 DP for it first chance I got. Felt like a Ferrari for a while with almost double the hp.

With the old girl sitting collecting dust...figured it was time to do something. Since my 58 is all but parted out....I figured I'd save the ragtop...and put it in the 60.

Not much left of the 58...but still some good sheetmetal for someone

The words 25/36hp engine, and accelerate, usually don't go together in ANY conversation!

If you are getting 70 - 73 mph out of that 36 hp, you are doing just fine. Sometimes speedometers might read a little fast. Check it with a GPS for accuracy. With my 1960 bug ,36 hp, I tend to avoid highways as much as possible. I stick to the secondary roads at 50 mph and enjoy the scenery.
These swing axles have their handling limitations. All bugs do but swing axles perhaps more so than IRS.

my coral red 57 would do 72 MPH tops in 1970,so he is doing good.original 36hp.

Looking good! I'm just an hour north of you, good to see a bug project so close. You should come to Frankenmuth on 6/9 for the bavarian fest low key informal VW show.

well, I drove the car as is since adding the ragtop for about a year....love the ragtop, still hate the ride. I'm in the process of switching over to a 70 IRS pan to see if it improves any. This past week I got the pans replaced, bottom of everything blasted and a coat of epoxy primer yesterday.
