Anyone have a dual exhaust on a 1.9 or 2.1 water cooled?
or
Have you ever considered it?
My header have a few bad spots of rust through, so I'm considering fabricating something.
If you've got one, lets see some pics! please. |

That's pretty sweet! How do the headers and pipes run? |

Each head is connected to its own muffler.
Sounds like a boat.
Not street legal, no CAT, no oxygen sensor.
I used them for offroad fun around the shop. |

Interesting, i was considering running to o2 sensor on just one manifold. And am undecided if I'll run a cat. No smog checks here, so as long as it's not ridiculously loud it shouldn't draw much attention.
Here's a few mockups. I'll need to map it out and test fit it with some paper rolls first.
Concept 1 - w some sort of universal muffler. May or may not be room for a cat. 02 sensor would have to run on one bank
Concept 2 - Similar to the EMPI Dual tip exhaust for the air cooled. Probably no room for a cat. O2 sensor could potential run on both banks between the mufflers with an Xpipe.
Concept 3 - provides most room for a cat. O2 sensor could only run off 1 bank.

Did you see a loss in low end torque or acceleration with the decreased "back pressure"?

Well, the two header banks are equal length and the mufflers are free flowing, but if you are looking to bolt on a "tuned" system, I would just get the Corkins/RMW WBXhaust system. |

here is what I would do. Not true duals, but Porsche 1 in 2 out stainless. Look at how it works with CAT as shown on Tristar Eric's ride.

It raining here today, so I'm not working on the vaN. Here's another concept of how I think I'm going to running a dual exhaust with an Xpipe. I may even look or wrapping or powder coating them with red. lol
My one concern here is heat from the exhaust running right below the heads, and heat on the passenger side below the intake. Hopefully if they are wrapped it would mitigate this or even see better under hood temps than stock. thoughts? |

I got my Porsche Muffler for free. I simply inquired about one at the local Porsche shop and the guy handed me a used stainless 1 in 1 out for free. I looked on ebay completed listings and see many for 1-200 bucks.

Winddude, I’m thinking about doing something similar to what you had thought of in your concept 2 drawing. The older dual muffler deal, when I was daydreaming about it I came to the same thoughts about the o2 sensor being only on one bank or possibly blocking it out where they come close and putting the o2 there. Also, forget the cat, I live in florida. Had you ever moved forward with actually doing the dual Exhaust on your Vanagon? I have a 1983 and it would be pretty awesome to retrofit the old 70’s duals on there. When i dreamed it up I thought to myself “someone has had to do this” because it’s too cool not to. But I haven’t found much on google about it. |
