What year range of cabrio? What is the part number?
I can't imagine there are many heated seat equipped cabrios in california. |
Not sure of the model year range. I bought the switch used ($5) and was told it came off a Cabrio.
I am also using the HSK heating elements, just need to find half a day to wire them in. _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

An easier to get, though less adjustable solution is available from the Volvo 2/7/9 series, most of which had heated seats. (well the 7 and 9 series. The 2 series was a little less common).
You can get replacement pads through IPD http://www.ipdusa.com/
and the switches are basic rockers that have a light for the "on" setting. Somewhere in the switch or the heater itself there is a switch that automatically shuts off the heating pad (i.e. they heat up pretty warm and then shut off).
That'd be an easy pick a part score if you want the cheap version.
Best,
B. |

G60 Corrado switch is the same as the cabrio, might be a good score as well in a pick and pull yard, I truely think any late 80s-early 90s VW use that switch excepting the vanagon. Can use one side to control each side, or do rear and back seperately (really nice to just turn up the element on the low back sometimes without your buns sweating.) Audi's are a great source of elements, though they often fracture right at the junction where the wire hits the element, so look carefully or bring an ohmmeter to the pick and pull. I have put Audi elements (I parted 3 200 quattros a few years back) into my '77 Westy, and into my mom's CRV, pretty easy install, pull the covers, put them right under, wire, have toasty buns. You can probably pull them for damn near nothing at a pick and pull where the seats have sat exposed, bring a razor blade, cut the periphery of the front seats and peel em off, pull em out. Don't do it on a good seat without asking or you may be buying it.

I think I found a picture that would ID it as a 92 Cabriolet seat switch. Not 100 percent but a good start. Need the number off the back of the switch in the picture to be exact. |

To sum things up, the single control switch: part #161 963 563 A
The double control switch is part # 161 963 563 (no A)
The rear plug is the same. The difference is that the single control switch has 2 less blades on it.
The circuit numbers above the blades are as follows, from left to right:
"58b 31 15 P/F 86F 86/B P/B"
Upper and lower case, with or without "/" exactly as printed on the switch housing
The single control switch has no blade for terminals 86/B and P/B
Plug and wiring stub for double switch:
Wire colors as they correspond to circuit numbers for the double switch:
58b - Blue/Silver
31 - Brown
15 - Black
P/F - Red/White
86F - Black/Yellow
86/B - Black/White
P/B - Red _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

I've seen those and thought about using them. Good price.
Are you going to try the VW switches to control the Dorman pads?
Please let us know how it works out. I may try that route next fall. _________________ -------------------------

What's the part number for the cover that goes on top of the steering column? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I have the cover for over the column and instead of a heated seat switch I put my check engine light and low oil light in the hole with a couple holes drilled in a blank. I plan on moving these lights to my cluster and try to find the dual control switch shown above. I will be making my own harness but would love to kinda copy the factory one to use relays controlled by the switch. Don't know if that will work with the rheostatic abilities of the switch though. I will update when I figure it out. |

Just an FYI the dual switch 161 963 563 is still available. There was 6 in FT Worth as of this morning. List is 188.00 dealer cost is 108.00 so
Keep that in mind when shopping. Wish I had known about this switch when I did my other van. The switches are dash mounted in that van. Plus I spent way more on the inserts. Live and learn I guess. |

At this point, I believe I have all components to install the heated seat/seats in my 1986 Westfalia. I have the VW rheostat, raised upper column cover in brown, #59 heated seat relay. I believe all I need now are the heated pad elements and the wiring harness. Does anybody know where I can find these or the VW part numbers? I've been told that the heated seat wiring harness from an early 90's Jetta MK is the same...can anybody here verify that? If I should find the wiring harness, but not the heated pads, does anybody here know if aftermarket heated pads will work? I will appreciate any information and help!

A small update on possibly useful information re twin switch.
The 161963563 is NLA in UK and Germany but 357963563 01C is available... and it looks like this!
It's £57.64 from VW. I've picked one up from ebay and will see how it fits in the hole as it;s designed to sit proud rather than flush.
It has the same connection on the back.

Thank you for the information and posting, MG. The updated version of the dual heated seat switch is interesting to see. Do you know if the wiring harness is available still? |

I am sooo tempted.. for low back, mostly.
But I think I'd mount a passenger side control near where they can get to it, themselves.
I know its not stock, but I am caring less about keeping it stock these days.. just so long as my Vanny stays off the Wall of Shame. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.
