A small update on possibly useful information re twin switch.
The 161963563 is NLA in UK and Germany but 357963563 01C is available... and it looks like this!
[snip pictures...]
It's £57.64 from VW. I've picked one up from ebay and will see how it fits in the hole as it;s designed to sit proud rather than flush.
It has the same connection on the back.

That switch is slightly too small for the steering wheel mounted cover. I have yet to find a good way to hold it in.
The dash mounted bezel from Cabriolet is NLA.
The dash pad mounted head light aiming bezel from the Vanagon looked like it would work too, but is NLA, too.
Somehow you need to hold the tabs out further on the switch for it to stay in place.
I now have all the harnesses (and extra wires) and controllers and factory heated pads to put into my VW Recaro seats. Got other stuff to deal with first....
NOTE: To use the factory switch and controllers your pads must have a thermistor temperature sensor. If that circuit fails, your seats can catch fire. I have seen pictures of A3 and A4 models and some Audis which use this same system with fried seats (Google it.)
I do not really find I need more than warm and hot, so the VW system is overkill for me. I only use those two settings in our A5 Jetta.
The aftermarket stuff with a couple of settings is just fine for me, I would think. The VW stuff is getting hard to find and IS expensive. The heated elements are $90 each wholesale from the dealer. The aftermarket stuff looks like it works just fine too. I do not know which is the way to go, but I started down the stock path and will try. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I have one of these in brown for my 1986 Westfalia GL. I am one heated seat wiring harness short of replacing the temp gauge with the heated seat switch. Can anybody point me in the direction of the wiring harness I need? |

I have luck adapting A3 harnesses from Corados, Passats, Jettas, etc....
Using the schematic you should be able to make it work. BUT, you need a few of them or pieces to extend the wires on an as needed basis. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

anybody used these seat heaters( linked below)?
Not as elegant as the factory $witch, but could be a good budget option ($25/seat) especially if you have seat covers they could live under. I like the idea of using them when they're needed, then storing out of the way. And power could easily be routed to the seat pedestals with cords tucked out of the way. Thoughts? I'm looking for someone else to test fit

Back from the dead 'cuz I came across this and wanted to provide an answer:

What year range of cabrio? What is the part number? |
In the USA, 1993 Cabriolets came with heated seats... but only if they have beige leather in them.
In Canada, heated seats were a common option installed in Cabriolets from about 1984 onward.
The Scirocco, Corrado, Golf and Passat also had heated seats as an option for some trim levels (mid-'80s to very early '90s) and use the same switch (#161963563) as the Cabriolets. The 161 indicates that the switch is an A2 chassis-era part. _________________ ~Kamz

We got a theft recovery 93 triple white cab with 14 miles on it with no heated seats back in the day. It went for a joy ride that totaled it. So the above is likely true.
I still have not put my heated seats together. The stock cloth is just fine here in So Cal. Someday I will put my Jetta Recaros in with the swivels I have and install the heated elements I got from an A3. Those elements lay nicely up to the Recaro bolsters. Some day.... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Just noticed that VC is stocking the upper column cover for the heated switch units for a fair price. 'tis the season when people's minds wander towards heated seats.
http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_1773_307/steering_column_upper_trim_cover_black.html
It also opens up options for a switch location for something other than heated seats, a temp indicator location that otiswesty pointed out above or whatever you can come up with. |

I have the single seat heater switch in the steering cowling, and when switching it on, I clearly can hear the relay click, but no heat.
Anyone know where to start looking at getting it working>?
Mileage on my Syncro is only 184k so would of thought they would still work |

I put the check engine and low oil light into that blank spot
on a zetec conversion I did. I hate drilling into the dash
to mount anything. I think they are selling a block of
plate for the hole that makes it real simple.
EDIT: van-cafes comes with the switch : GoWesty it
has to be bought seperatley. _________________ Bill M

Yeah, I am not a huge fan of hacking holes into the dash for switches when something like this is available.
It looks and is OG and a future owner can change it out for something else if desired easily.
I got 3 for my vans |

In the case of them not heating up when you hear the relay click .You have to pull the pads out of the seats and re solder the connectors onto the pad . It is a little confusing the first time ,as the lower pad had 4 connectors and the upper has 2 . The second set of wires regulates the temperature out to the relay .
They become un-soldered from the movement of entry and exiting for many years .
I used mine today ,and man are they nice . If you are in and out of a vehicle all day as I am ,it is not until the afternoon when it warms up that it is still on . _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Triple knob (bastard)

So, what goes on the side of that steering wheel mounted bezel for a heated seat switch? Is anyone using it for anything else? I see a hole in the side of it... Perhaps the hole on the side is for the windshield wiper switch arm?
I don't think my heated seat setup will use the stock switch, since my wife would have a cow every-time I turned them both off when mine got warm. I'm weird that way, they have to match. I hate driving in our jetta and she has hers on 5 and mine is on 2...
Any other useful things this hole can be used for? I can't read German but I like the idea of an outside temp sensor gauge... Does anyone have one?
Anyone know if you can change that gauge to F from Celsius?
(its pretty bad if you can spell Celsius and not Fahrenheit...) _________________ Check out our Our youtube channel: Https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-EbskIxNm6SYzsq4ugG81A

Go back a page, there is a picture and part number for a double switch that can control 2 seats. |

The ID of the hole is 24.5mm x 40.5mm
I am going to use it for a non stock switch, possibly for a OBA system. |

I go the natural no power way - sheepskins from NZ. A friend sent them to me over 20 years ago. They keep me warm in the winter and cool in the summer. _________________ '85 Vanagon Westfalia |
