I believe it should be the off centered type. I do have an SC key that is centered tho', but I don't think many were made that way. |

We were first owners of a 1963 bug while I was growing up. The ignition key was offset, the engine compartment key was centered. My 66 bug is the same way. |

Doors and ignition use the same key right?
This is from a aug 63 owners manual. It shows a centered key.
65 manual, centered key
67 off center
I take it replacements could be either way.
Were verts the only model that had total matching keys? (doors, hood lock, glove box, and decklid) |

Just an FYI . The owner's manual may show the centered style, but like I said, SU comes in both style. You may want to contact Gabriel the VW key guru or check his ads. They pop up from time to time and he can cut them according to your key code. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

My 65 only came with one key off centered without a cut out "the one on the bottom". Found the correct key blank with cut out on line. They called it an "aftermarket" ignition key. Its a little different but works fine. I showed it to my friend with a 63 and his was exactly the same "aftermarket" ignition key. Even the same cut too. we tried both our keys in each others ignitions and they both start. I wonder how many of us have the same damn key.
does your keys look like this??? |

Which key profile is the key on top? I have the same after market key and after comparing it to this picture its a dead ringer. I am hoping to get a OG VW key soon, but don't know the key profile |

I'm lucky enough to have my original SG73 key and it's offset but with the VW rotated 90 degrees to the ones shown.
I'd quite like a spare in this style. _________________ Do not follow me, for I may not lead. Do not lead me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either; actually just bugger off and stand over there will you. |

The two keys that are horizontal in this pic are correct for your car. _________________

My 63 has an aftermarket ignition with a key that is nearly identical to the one on the bottom, and I would like a key with the VW emblem like the one on the top. None of the original key blanks seem to be the right type of key to make a copy. Does anyone know where I could get a key like the one on top? |

Correct looking keys don't exist for your aftermarket repro ignition switch. If you want the correct key, you must buy an original ignition switch.
If you don't like the idea of using a 45 year old switch, you can transfer the original lock cylinder into your repro ignition switch. That will allow you to use the correct key. _________________
