I went to look at a bug that was for sale locally, and other than the fact that the rust was too bad, I saw this....
He had no explanation (that he was willing to give) and he had the motor replaced.
WTF is this? Looks like it's directly over the gas filler tube. _________________ 1966 Beetle

I know exactly what it is. Its old fuel. I had the same nasty splatter when I blew out my clogged metal fuel line with an air compressor. Its nasty and hard to get off, in fact I think my splatter mark is still there too. |

Wow. I never would have thought old fuel!
I wish he'd taken better car of it. It makes me mad to see it sitting there.
We tried to buy it from him, but he's lost his mind on the price.
He took the paint off with airplane stripper and then rolled it out of the garage to have his driveway paved and left it to sit in the weather for 2 years. AFTER paying $3000 for a rebuilt engine. It's 100% there, 1966 with accessories.
It even has the dealer sticker on the decklid.
So sad... _________________ 1966 Beetle

We tried to offer him less. He won't budge.
I was okay with the apron at first, but when I saw the holes at the drip rail...
Now I pass by that poor bug and I'm just so pissed. It's going to waste because of a stubborn old man.
Why won't people let go of them when they can be given a new life anad loved? dammit. _________________ 1966 Beetle

Nothing really salvagable there. Not even for $100.00 Shame.

That can be fixed. Even the hole in the drip rail isn't as hard as it looks. Ask me how I know. $200 is a better price though. I too have a bug that an old man let rot. Luckily he sold it to the guy I got it from. 30 years it sat. Many of the same rust issues. A little media blasting will change the whole look of that car. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

I agree it's a salvageable project. The pan is good, so is the dash, steering wheel, etc. Even the seat frames are solid and it has a clear title.
He says he paid $3000 for the engine and to have it installed. I just don't see that especially when he never drove it after having the engine put in.
The engine is why he says he won't come off the $1000. We told him that since he let it sit, even the motor isn't worth that.
He's of the mind that because he put lots of money in it 5 years ago, but then let it sit and rot, it's still worth what he put into it. Not.
We tried to offer him $500 for the motor and steering wheel. I think the motor is worth that. But nope, if he parts it, he wants the $3000 for the motor.
Not gonna happen. _________________ 1966 Beetle

Agreed, unless you can start it (and some say drive the car) with the new motor, a "rebuilt motor" is not worth anything but the tin and accessories you can see with your own eyes are good. |

Yep, that's what i was afraid of. He can't tell me what size it is and he refuses to tell us who did it.
That alone raised red flags.
But, we're still looking. I think hubby has decided he wants a bus if he can't find a bug. (He really wants a double cab, but don't we all!) _________________ 1966 Beetle

It doesn't look that bad to me for an East coast car. I would fix it, I wouldn't pay 1000 though, maybe 600. |
