I had my stock, unwelded fan to 7K+ on accident.......it held up. Would I do it again? Heck no. Laughing I'm building a new IDA motor, going to weld the fan. I should say, that you can gain a bit of 'buffer' if you will, by running a smaller power pulley at the track to keep that fan from spinning so fast. This of course all depends on what RPM you're shifting at if it's isn't too obnoxious.

15 years ago I missed a shift and had the stock fan explode. Had to replace the shroud, oil cooler, alternator and fan shroud. Also had 2 fins broken on the right side head.

I tig'ed my T3 fan without issue. There is enough tab bent over at each fin to weld it without filler rod so throwing it out of balance isn't an issue. I had everything from pulley to flywheel balanced and the fan was still dead on after welding it. It's an easy job with a good tig welder and a little skill. If anyone is interested PM me and I'll weld it up for a fraction of the cost of a Berg one. Then you can get it balanced (or at least checked) when you get the rest of the parts done. I also plan to make a jig for my balance machine so I can take care of that part as well.

Didn't research it well enough prior to purchasing one from Kustom1. What a wobbling piece of crap. Will be calling Berg on Monday. Live and learn...

You can prevent some of the fan issues by running a GOOD BELT, "race loose". The fan will hit a speed and won't go faster, even with increasing engine speed. That's one problem with Serpentine Belts, they grip "too well".

Is there a market for a better fan?
We are thinking about manufacturing an advanced fan design.

So, welding them is the easy part. How does one balance one themselves? I know how it's done, but have any of you done it yourself at home?

sure, anybody can do it themselves at home. you just need to own a balancing machine. do you have a balancing machine at home?

The bottom line is you never want one to explode as it tears things up beyond belief. I had one explode at Sacramento (BOM) and it took out the fan shroud, alternator and broke a few fins off of one cylinder. The noise.... holy crap! My linkage got tweaked and what not. Let’s just say that night I was in the pits doing a teardown and repair with a mediocre fan I bought from a vendor. On race day I pulled the belt so there was no chance of another grenade going off. I now run a Berg fan with a serpentine belt and have taken it up but still uncomfortable with it so I pull the belt when I race. Even if you use a v-belt and run it loose it is risky in my opinion and most time the belt just rolls off and you lose it at halftrack.

Fully tig welded German fan is the way to go and remember to torque fan nut to 40-45 lbs.

Sounds appropriate due to the weak USD. There are other ways than spending $462.00.

After reading this older yet informative thread and speaking w a berg late last year i figured a purchase was in order. It seemed at the time there were only a few German OEM fans hanging around still.

I waited until now to place the order. I thought od share woth you what i received and let you comment: Prumsa (sounds brazilian?)

Im NOT completely on the up and up re good vs bad practices with welded fan production but upon inspection i did notice the following so perhaps you could comment:
- good weld penetration
- it seems filler rod was used
- the veins dont appear to be perpendicular to the axis
- the edges are ground for circumference rounding - is this how its balanced?
- clean bare metal, coated w a wd40 like substance (do folks have theirs painted / powder coated and will this affect the balance?

It certainly does look like filler rod was used. Using a TIG to simply melt the existing tabs over works extremely well though....
