So I rarely ever see this roof rack. It's not in the rack sticky. I remember my mom had this exact one on the '69, and I my buddy has it bolted (somewhat goofily) to his Thing, even though it is a Type 3 rack. W I know it's got to be old, as I remember it having it back in the early 70's. Was this aftermarket, or OG? Is this one that is a desirable one, or is it one for the recycling bin?

Just curious, mostly. I've wondered about it for years and seeing it on the Thing last weekend sparked my curiosity.

I'm no expert but am pretty sure those were a factory option on later squarebacks. I am very certain that I have a square in my back yard with one of those racks on it. It isn't pretty but there.

I don't think they are very desirable because they require holes in the roof.

Standard VW-issue bolt-on Squareback roof rack.

That is the most common rack made. I think they came out in 1968 or so, although I have seen them bolted to a few earlier cars ( blasphemy Smile )

I wouldn't throw it out. There are normally a few in the Classifieds here.

Dealer optioned rack as mentioned. I put one on my 69......Not a big deal and I have had no leakage. I used rain gutter silicone when I screwed it in to the roof. Measurements took up the most time, to make sure it was centered.

There is a front and back to those racks.

The wider end goes to the front.

The front mounting screws line up with the door gap on the B pillar.

I've got one of those racks out in the backyard. Now I just need a Square with a roof to put it on. Wink
