HistoryA very strange and exciting detail is the ID plate. It says clearly that the car has chassisnumber 1-056950, which makes it an early '46. Despite of this it says that it was manufactured in 1947?... Strange. When I raised the question at TheSamba, someone thought that the car had crashed or so and returned to the factory. The car would have been restored there and made into a '47 (In the same way as my restored '46, which is actually a '43) It could be like that, but it's strange. Especially that we got hold on two similar '40s cars...
The Volkswagen factory had a remanufacturing line, and this line remanufactured more than 10,000 Volkswagens by August of 1949. That would represent more than 10 percent of total car production having being remanufactured.

Remanufactured from what? Did that take in old cars from dealers? Owners? Where is the information documented?

Most of the cars at that time were sold to occupying forces. Since the original intent of getting the factory back to running condition right after the war was to use it as a repair facility, rebuilding VWs was tops on their list of things to do.

Sounds logical, is this documented anywhere? I have the Birth of the Beetle book but have not read it in a while. Is this described in there perhaps??

It's been related in many books on the history of the factory. Step away from the mouse.

It's chronicled in this book. Volkswagen Beetle: The Rise From the Ashes of War. By Simon Parkinson, ISBN#1-874105-47-2

The 10,000th remanufactured Beetle is shown on the lower left of the cover along with two British officers.

The vast majority of Volkswagens built prior to 1949 went to the occupation forces. When these cars got wrecked, as they often did, they were returned to the factory to be remanufactured, They were completely disassembled and then rebuilt on a regular production line. Due to the scarcity of resources in postwar Germany, all reusable parts were refurbished, and any new parts that were required, up to and including complete bodies, were taken from regular production.

That's definitly a book I miss in my collection. where can I buy that one?
Remanufacturing is still done (or at least untill not so long ago) at the caravan factory of SMV in Sweden.
