I'm just a newb, maybe it's stock. My 1971 has the same setup. And also the same setup on the rear drivers side window.

As far as I know, that's the "normal" setup for a '71 Bus. The sliders came later, and I think they look neat. I'd buy a set for my bus, but I already spent the money to tint them, to cut down the summer heat. _________________ '67s Rule & '71 Buses Too! |

Mine was originally set up that way ('74 Deluxe), I switched to a Riviera slider and Westfalia slider in the middle for camping convenience and to confuse the hell out of people... _________________ Xargaret

Glad you're OK. Was afraid you slipped off a rock and busted you head . Solid slider windows look great but the others have a purpose. Tint is almost mandentory here but where you are does the sun ever shine? Tint reduces interior heat from the sun. You would also loose visability, particularly when the sun isn't shining bright. But it offers some privacy which is nice. It hinders people seeing in. _________________ 71 Superbug

its normal, but i think most prefer the jalousie's for camping or solid for looks.....my passenger side rear has the little "smoking window" i think they are called vent windows.

As far as I know, the factory sliders did not come in until the 78 and 79 model years. There were earlier sliders in the Riviera campers, but they were not from VW as evidenced by the tempered glass marking ("bug"). The vent window in the slider was pretty standard, I had one in my bus when I bought it as the sliding door had been replaced with a repainted Kombi door. I moved it to the pass rear spot and combined it with the shortened rear glass that I pulled out of the driver's side on a junk bus. Now my kids can get good ventilation to both sides of the back seat. Just have to be careful when opening the sliding door to make sure no hands are sticking out. Currently I have deluxe sliders where my jalouise windows should be.
Now that rear slider above would be sweet! _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

I believe the common nomenclature is quarter window. _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

I replaced mine in my 71 with sliders and love them. The only problem is not being able to get screens for them, but some how I will make some using mag strips, etc. Here is Washington it does get hot, that is if you are unable to camp under a big shade tree. Though I would love to get some factory screens. _________________ As they say, "You never know until you ask the question."

We called them "smoking windows" back in the Day. You cracked it open to suck your cig or cigar smoke out. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Tram, what you call them, now or whenever, doesn't change what the auto industry calls them, not that it makes any difference. My intent was to inform, not criticize, though it may have been perceived as criticism. _________________ WTB swivel table hdwr.

I was merely pointing out that I'd heard that term in reference to those types of windows in the past. I've heard them referred to as "wind wings" as well. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

This question reminds me of that tired joke we used to tell as kids
"Hey, you got a crack where your ass is supposed to be!" (Those were darn near standard you know)
It's just one of those things that make you say hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I've heard the term smokers window, vent wing, and flatulence relief hatch. Never are they referred to as a quarter window. Quarter glass are located aft of the B pillar and always non movable. Usually as a fixed filler behind a movable window as in and "opera window" aka quarter glass. I learned alot in my short time at ppg. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

I thought Lizzie was talking about smoked glass. Not about the rear vent windows. Back in the day the wild cars we drove were smokin'. _________________ 71 Superbug
