Hi, what's the function of the 3rd switch to the right?

It's on the dash of my 1993 EV Carthago from Germany

If you are talking about the switch just to left of the stereo, judging by the icon, it should be for fog lights.

Can't see it clear enough, but if the lines are horizontal it might be a rear fog light switch. My '90 Audi has separate switches for front and rear fogs.

With the switch on and the driving lights on, is there a really bright orange light illuminated in the rear maybe on one side?

those are the lights you're looking for. pre-facelift (i.e. pre-95) T4s will have only one.

interesting. It should have them.

your van's imported from Germany, I gather? Could it have been rear-ended and cobbled together unprofessionally?

I don't think so, the two rear doors do not show any sign of 'mis allignment'.
