I will probably need to pull the engine this spring to free up or install a new throttle cable which keeps sticking on the highway on a hot day (yes it does get hot in Canada in the summer ) If so I plan on replacing the original tar boards which are getting pretty bad. The ones that cip carries
https://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C24%2D111%2D898%2D805
are listed as 56-77. Is there much difference in a 54? Maybe just the routing of the wires? Anybody else carry them? I checked WW but didn't see them. Thanks for any help. _________________ Stop worrying about how much your car will be worth when you are dead and build it to make you happy! |

If you can find rolled roofing of similar thickness that does not have mineral applied to one side ("gravel") that is best. I have a roll of something close in my basement (Bitumen I think). The felt paper thing has held up well and looks great, but you'll need a lot of glue... _________________ John Henry

Thanks for the suggestions. BTW mine left the factory on April 9, 1954 (so was being built on April 8 which was coincidentally my 5th birthday) and still had the original boards on back and sides when I bought it. _________________ Stop worrying about how much your car will be worth when you are dead and build it to make you happy! |

I actually really like the Wolfsburg West ones.... they are paper in front of tarboard and look very clean when installed. The cheap ones always have this terrible waffle pattern on them (and not the CORRECT early waffle pattern). Here is my April '55 with the WW kit installed.

Careful buying the cip1 tarboard. Past couple times I bought it (german) the material just cracked. Bugcity in CT has a good tarboard for around the same price and does not crack. Nice and thick, and soft enough to get the spikes through.

52HoffmanSplit,
Thanks, I had searced for 'tar boards' on WW's site but couldn't find them so after reading your post I dug out their paper catalogue, tried again and found them under 'sound absorber kit', #111813805, in case anybody else is looking. They do indeed look clean and smooth. I love this forum so much, so many knowledgeable, helpful people. Thanks all! _________________ Stop worrying about how much your car will be worth when you are dead and build it to make you happy! |

Also before you install the tarboard don't forget to glue the hairy strips to the firewall. At least that's what they did in Wolfsburg.
Salut |

Thought I'd ask here instead of opening a new thread. I just got the WW ENGINE SOUND ABSORBER KIT but it is not a direct fit. Must I cut it to fit? Or just bend it badly? It's a shame to ruin this nice brand new set. How do I go about installing it? |

Do you have your old stuff to use as a pattern? |

No, but the WW mats are sort of cut to shape. It's just not a direct fit - they are bigger than the areas to cover. Here's the link where you can see their shape

I have put new ones in two different cars and havent had to cut anything to fit. Maybe just the WW ones are that way? _________________ 60 Rock Grey Vert |

Well in the end I had to be a little creative and cut a piece off the side parts. It then fit wonderfully

I dont think those are installed correctly. The pointed side of the delta should be up toward the roof channel, and the cut off side matches the rear apron. Here is a video of one being installed. Skip to about 2:40 and you will see the side pieces being fit. I would correct this before you reinstall the engine:

darn I could have sworn I tried it that way too but it didn't fit. I guess it's just too hard for Wolfsburg West to mark these L and R to avoid confusion
vw57drvr where were you when I first asked on this thread...
any idea howto glue those pieces back on?

The wiring harness runs BEHIND the tar board. You'll wanna fix this so the wiring doesn't get melted |
