My son has my 91 Camper GL and it seized it's water pump and broke the alternator and water pump belt down in Jacksonville, FL.
Can you recommend a trusted mechanic/shop there?

Thanks, I also saw that and another shop with only one feedback but neither of them seem to have any specifically from Vanagon owners.
I wish that we had some members here that could give me a recommendation. My son will give both shops a call and ask for an estimate today and hopefully get the work done early next week.

I can hear the groaning when I post this, but when you are a long ways from your home and have car trouble with any vehicle, the dealer is always an option. The work preformed will have a nationwide warranty and if the work is not done properly you will have some sort of recourse. Jacksonville at one time was Mecca for VW in the southeast. VW headquarters, importing and factory training were all carried out there. I am sure there must still be some very qualified old school VW mechanics in the area. Good luck.

I have not been there since the early 90's but they did good work then.

The water pump issue was repaired by Hill Top Motors and cost me $406.49 for labor, 2 belts (PS & AC) and labor for replacement of the coolant. I provided my own graf water pump, coolant and distilled water. They also discovered that my water temp sender is not working properly so add another $100.00+ to that for parts and labor when the part comes in.

They were prompt, courteous, very knowlegeable and if I had split hairs on something to gripe about is that they did not use my distilled water to add to the coolant. Labor might have been a little steep but I might just be used to working on the camper myself Smile

I recommend them and hope this experience helps somebody in the future.

The other shop from ROADHOUSE.COM that was being considered never answered the phone Sad
