August 1977 in Sacramento, CA. In front of my parents house. I think they just bought the house.

I still have the 70. My parents bought the 75 new at Niello in Sacramento. They always had issues with the fuel injection, owned it for about a year and then traded it in for a Toyota Corona.

Full partition panel bus, the vents are standard on a panel with a bench seat and cab divider.

The year is 1971. I am 11 years old and my mom and dad have taken my sister and me out of school for a year to go on a road trip that would forever change how I look at the world. Our first stop was Europe. Going through Europe back then was like going through Disneyland... each country had its own beauty, its traditions, and food. Kind of like "It's a Small World" on steroids. After 6 months of living out of our $3,000, 92 sq. ft., Campmobile, and with winter approaching, our family decided to join up with a safari caravan of Land Rovers to cross the Sahara desert, manage our way through the Congo, see the game parks of Uganda and Kenya, then head south to Cape Town. My 12th birthday was spent in Mombasa, where I snorkeled the crystal clear water of the Indian Ocean at a beachside camping spot with a small thatched roof restaurant and bar called the Twigga Campsite and Lodge. It was a place my mom thought my father would never leave... until a green mamba fell out of a tree between me and a stray dog and slithered up another tree much to my jaw-dropping horror. That was only one instance of a near-death experience. I also set a world record at the age of 12 in the 100 meter dash, running away from a pack of hyenas at night. Even crazier, a bull elephant charged us on a remote road and rammed our Campmobile into a tree as we tried to get out of his way.
I recently talked to my father about what he loved the most about our road trip. "I guess I enjoyed the freedom of it all. No rules, no stop signs, no speed cameras... you were just on your own. I guess having that much freedom also subjected you losing it all if you made the wrong decision at the wrong time." Having heard that, I paused for a moment, and thought of my road trips with my own family. It truly is about freedom... and though freedom sometimes brings about peril, it certainly is the most invigorating part of life. I hope you all have a road trip planned to get out and see our beautiful country, push your boundaries, and experience something you've never seen before. As I sit here writing the column on family road trips, I've been planning my next big adventure. In the coming months, I will share my diesel JL Jeep build and overland trailer... in search of my next adventure.

My first bus circa 1987? I was 19. I got it for free. Had to tow it home, no motor and the trans and axle's were just rolling around in the back. Got it home, threw a motor in it and drove it around for a couple of years or so. I sold it, the kid ended up abandoning it soon after and I got it back.
