If the moving screw you are referring to is the nut on the end of the throttle shaft and you can wiggle it up and down then yes, there's no way in hell you will get it to run properly without rebushing the shafts.

i figure that i may just run a single carb while i wait for my carbs to be rebuilt, if i decide to rebuild them. what would i need to do the swap? intake manifold, i have a few spare carbs for my bug, what else would i need to do?

i know the bug parts may be too little to get my bus up to maximum performance level, but i would be happy with it moving up my driveway right now Smile Laughing

Thanks
Stuart

You are killing yourself. Single carbs are a loser on a type 4 engine. Don't do it. Same with a 009. Another loser because it cannot deliver the advance your engine wants to see.

Send you carbs off to have them rebuilt AND re-bushed if needed. A good used SVDA distributor would be a huge advange over a 009. Your carbs and distributor have to work together for best results.

i read up on that before, and i realize that. i also know that running at all is better than non, and i have gotten a free dizzy with pertronix and a intake and single carb for 20 from the same guy, and if that gets my bus goin, then ill wtart working on getting better performance from it. i also have to save up for the dual carb rebuilds. so if i can pay 20 and drive it for the 6 months im saving up, then i get 6 months of driving, then i get the rest (after the fix) of great driving.....take your pick.

thanks for the input, and i plan on testing out a few dizzys i have once i get the engine going, but i want to know it runs period first.

Thanks Again

Stuart

Good price if everything is there. They will still need fine tuning for your engine but should be a good start point

When you put it in, check that the engine is at tdc by watching the valves, not by any of the marks (flywheel, distributor rim, etc). You don't know who has done what to that motor, or how much care they took when doing it. When you know that the motor is at tdc, then you can check the marks to see if in fact they are reliable.

i got some new carbs (used)
they are dual 32/34 solex carbs. anybody have info on hooking up the linkage? the guy i got them from wasnt a very big help.... Rolling Eyes

the throttle shaft on one of the carbs moves maybe .002-.010 of an inch. is that alot? too much? it just barely clicks when i try really hard to get it to move up and down. other one is solid.

I was going to ask if you may have dropped something since you were putting the new carbs on. A 2" screw could cause all kinds of damage. Don't crank it any more. You may have to drop the engine and pull the head on that side to see what damage has been done to valves/piston. Shocked

Type 4 engines were designed to have the heads pull-able with the engine in place, but it is easier to just pull the engine entirely. Gives you way more room to torque the heads and everything.

Not a difficult job. First time isn't too bad with Ratwell's engine pulling guide.

And to think that the bus would probaly been running if he would have listened to Randy in Maine and learned how to set the timing...
As Randy said... he is just killing himself doing everything but what it would take to get the ol bus running...
Just my thoughts after reading the entire post...
