Or perhaps he is trying to give Terry Kay a stroke?

the hole(s) and lubing the bearing work only if the motor is not dead....

I have to remove the dash to replace the motor. On the new one I caped the end of the bearing, glue on a small diameter hose and let it hang in the vent .. this is for future lubing...

Agreed that if the motor is too seized it cannot be revived. Some have some success lubing the motor bearing thru the port and then using a coat hanger or such to spin it a little and then it would start . It just needed a little help the first time.... YMMV.. Very Happy

those are lucky ones... once the old one out, I connect it direct to the battery and spin... still no go...

I haven't had my share of luck.. so with the dash board out the to do list is quite long..

- replacing the blower motor
- replacing the clutch pedal
- replacing all the flap foam seals
- clean the ground tree, add another one
- sound deadening material on the front wall
- replacing the windshield spray nozzles
- repairing broken accordion air hoses

Yes the third hole was a WHOOPS moment. Got it a bit too far to the left. It was actually the first hole.

I too added mlv sound deadening to the front and replaced the foam seals on the flaps. "Sound Deadener Showdown" sells a closed cell foam that works great to replace those foam seals. Had lots of it left over from doing the van. Fitting the MLV all through the front was a challenge but worth the effort.

As long as the dash is out another good preventive maintenance is lubing the wiper bushings.

I ended up replacing my washer nozzles with Porsche dual nozzles.

Both of the vans I have pulled the heater boxes on had broken tabs where they are attached to the body. I don't know if the POs had broken them or if this is common. Interesting was that my 89's box was attached (from the factory) with two sheet metal screws inserted from the front and two bolts rather than all 4 bolts from the inside.
I had been getting lots of air leaking through the gasket between the box and the body as the last time it was removed it wasn't reinstalled correctly. That air leak was really noticeable when it was cold out.

Replacing the blower and had searched this topic before. I ended up buying the parts I needed over a year ago, including the little primer bulb.

Well everything is apart and I was comparing the the new and old fan, there seems to be some changes....

The end on the new one is sealed up. No need for bulb or a hole.

I'm keeping the old one around just in case as I heard the quality of the new ones is hit or miss.

The old one never turned on though not sure what the reason was, it does spin freely and can hear an occasional squeak.

Is the black dot on the end of the shaft just a paper seal covering the opening?

the new blower motors are one of the cheaper parts your van will consume. I unstuck my blower with a drill and oil, but it started squealing shortly after it was back together. so repeat. the new blower has been great.

Well Terry, both Karl and I have done ours as have several other folks. If you look at my post on page two you can figure out the date that I did mine and you can probably go back and figure out when Karl did his as well. I will let you know if and when mine fails, assuming I keep my 83 1/2 on the road long enough for that to happen.

After 7 years it is time for me to lube the motor again as it is now squeaking occasionally when first turned on.

Easy enough to do the second bearing if you plan ahead, could be done in situ as well but would be difficult to locate the hole in the fan well.

Just got done doing the fan motor bearings on my 83 1/2. Since I had drilled the fan rotor when I had had the fan assembly out 3-4 years ago, I was able to do both bearings easily enough.

Just revisiting this thread since I'm installing a new fan motor while putting new foam on the flaps.
Just FYI if you were to drill this hole as shown for the other bearing go ahead and paint a white circle around it so you can see it easier. It would be better then looking for a black hole on a black surface inside a dark box!

Yeah, spray through the port and go camping, or tear out the dash? Let's see now...

Holy crap! It BLEEPING worked! Fan had been squeaky on and off for a long time...and today fan stopped suddenly, and then noticed the blown #13 fuse. I popped in a spare fuse (knowing what would happen) and she blew again in a millisecond. I had heard about the port Mullendore Port so jumped on the Samba to look where to drill. 15 minutes later (all while dreading pulling the dash) I was done and it worked!! Not sure for how long...but she went from DEAD to ALIVE in 15 min. Used Tri-FLow and drilled (2) 3/8" holes. I agree with dude above jalan...2 holes better than one for a light and a hole more to the right seems to be a 'better' angle. Thanks Karl, thanks all!!!

Another happy heater fan...I had 20 minutes last night between kid dropoff/pickups and knocked it out. Thanks again Karl, this is a Vanagon Hall of Fame mod.

Pulling the dash is really not that bad. Not sure why people freaks out about it so much.
