I was taking apart a 36hp engine I got with the '58 PG/SG I just picked up. The engine is a 2-series (not 20-) engine which is supposed to be in the ballpark of my bus. Interesting thing is it has a governor under the 28 PCI carb. I've never seen that before. I always though they put them on later buses, 1500 on up. So, is this a stock item for a 36?? Seems sort of superfluous if you know what I mean. |

My '59 ambulance has one. The intake manifold and carb brace are specific to the governor setup.

Thanks for posting these pics, makes some pretty good reference points for what is a pretty rare option on a 36hp Bus,first available and started as an option in February '58 and finished May '59.
Still a mystery though on why you would want to order one as a M178 option when they are slow enough already, especially when you have a fully loaded so23 interior on board as well.

The prevailing theory seems to be that if you owned a fleet of VW buses and had your employees trying to push them to go a bit faster the governor prevented them from doing this and you kept you fleet a bit longer.

It’s in a 59 Kombi that I imported from Canada a few years back. |

Me either and Ive owned a lot of Canadian buses!
It’s quite possible all the ones I got were rotted off or maybe someone removed the covers?
Either way that’s one sweet kombi Mike! _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

Here are some comparison pics between the carb support bracket for a governor manifold versus a 'normal' manifold.

My M 178 stamped fan shroud came from Ontario...
Interesting M 173 stamping too, that's not been seen before. The yellow M 178 on the gas tank was factory marked so that the bus and engine were mated together reinforcing the idea that these governor equipped buses were special rather than the norm. I'd always thought that M 178 was the only 36 hp engine option available. M 173 is accurately an exhaust item but since the stamping is on the fan shroud I'd qualify it as engine related. Nothing is listed for M 173 in Progressive Refinements while M 178 does appear. _________________ Roads Scholar &

This is the story on it.
It was driven to a farm by some hippy dudes in the 70s and was left there in their barn until we were working there and dragged it out . So it sat for 30 years at a guess
The farm was near Princeton in the simikameen valley
Charlie Hamill says they wanted to make sure that Engine went into that bus. |

Hey Mike.
Curious is the M plate also stamped 178 & 173 ??
My so23 is also a M178 Bus so might have to look for crayon markings on the tank as well. |
