just sent in the info for my jan 53 zwitter in to the registry and looking over the chart i noticed something.
my car Chassis 1-0431372 Body 370384
there is a car listed that is 3 cars after mine (Chassis 1-0431375) but no body # listed.
there is also a car built 43 cars before mine (Chassis1-0431329) and the body # is only 11 off from my car (body 370373)
my question is how were the body and chassis #s matched up?
I would think that the body # & vin # would be closer together on 2 such cars. _________________ Jesus Saves

IMO they were not matched up. They had the chassis on the line a whole bunch of bodies. They just grabbed a body and put it on the chassis. After a while someone brought in some more bodies and put them in the way of the bodies already there.
The chassis number after yours could have a body number several hundred lower than your body number.

The Australian CKD kit cars had a chassis number assigned at the German factory, but the body number was applied here in God's own country during local production. This would mean that a bunch of un-numbered bodies would have been shipped from Germany at regular intervals. Guaranteed to bugger up chassis / body number alignment reasonably often.
Doesn't help with Zwitters, as our first batch came in 1954. However South Africa and Ireland had CKD production underway at that time, although I don't know if their body numbers were factory assigned or stamped during assembly. |
