Installing a 12V solenoid on a 6V starter does not fix the problem. The gear is engaged before the motor is energized. Look inside the solenoid, the contacts are at the bottom, which means the motor is not connected to the battery until the gear is all the way out. Grinding is due to a damaged flywheel, which is caused by running a 6V starter in a 12V system.
The people who say "I RAN A 6V STARTER ON 12V FOR YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS" don't post a pic of the damaged flywheel, however, you can see what happens in the pic below.
Look at this slow motion video showing the inner action between a starter gear and the flywheel.

This could be your problem after running a 6V starter in a 12V system. Pic sent to me by a customer after buying a Hybrid 6/12 starter.

I have been running my 1961 6 volt starter for decades on 12 volts, near 100,000 miles I guess. Have done several engine pulls over that time, the starting gears appeared fine everytime, no excessive wear.
Not saying it always is this way, but that's my experience. I am sorry, but no photographs, I have no other reason to pull the motor out so that ain't happening anytime soon. If it ever does fail, I will take a photograph. Besides we all know what a good condition gear set looks like anyway.
