I am putting in my double thrust cam bearings and one side of the case accepts the off set tang on the bearing but the other side doesn't have the notch in the case for the other half of the bearing to set into.
Both halves of the cam bearings have this off set tang.
What do I do? _________________ '73 SB

File off the tang on the bearing. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I filed the tang into the case, it takes 5 minutes and you won't have to worry about a spun bearing. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

I got the bearings in the case and they were tight. I filed the thrust side on the flywheel side to .002.
I installed the cam in the case and torqued it down and checked the end play and got .001.
With straight gears, will this be enough clearance or should I go for more? _________________ '73 SB

Will .001" clearance be enough? _________________ '73 SB

What did you wind up doing?
I hear the window is .002" - .004"
Checking mine tonight. As usual, reading a bunch of threads looking for the one thing I may have missed. _________________ Gerg

In my case, the bearings did not fit right. I had to peen the sides where the thrust part rides against in order for the bearing to not wobble side to side. _________________ Gotta give my props to:

Put the cam bearing in and with the case split put the cam in 1/2 the case and hit the front and rear of the cam with a hammer and punch and then do the same to the other 1/2 of the case-then take your measurements. |

I read another thread where Raby described that. Tried it with no polishing and only got < .001". Had to polish a tad. I have case torqued now and just shy of .002" end play after tapping each end with wood drift to seat / center bearings. _________________ Gerg

What I ended up doing was taping them together and sanding them on a flat piece of granite with some wet/dry paper w/ oil and doing both sides a little. Put them back in with an old cam and gave it a gentle wack on both ends of the cam to seat them.
Then tried the new cam and it fit w/ .002side play. _________________ '73 SB

Your case is probably worn out and you by doing what you did just introduced huge amounts of endplay on your cam shaft which will pound the bearing to death in short order.

For me a file takes off just too much on the thrust edges. I take 600 grit w/ a little water on a straightedge and lightly sand my edges down till it fits. I do this until it doesnt pull the bearings out when i pull the cam from the case. Takes me like 5 minutes a piece usually. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

I used 800 grit on a vent wing glass, and some liquid wrench spray oil as a lube. _________________ Gerg
