|
|
Hi Bay window lovers. I'm a long time VW person but when it comes to Bays, I'm way out of my depth. So I'm doing the logical thing coming here trying to find info on something I think may be rare.
A buddy of mine has been offered a late model Westy for a VERY low price. A few days ago he went to look at it and got a few pics on his iPhone. He showed them to me on Sunday and told me some interesting things.
So tell me if you guys have any thoughts on this.
1) Looking at the pics, the front bumper is "extended" forwards, and there is what looks like a plastic or fiberglass semi-circle spare tire cover. The spare rides low and behind the bumper unlike every other Bay I've seen.
2) There is a FULL Westy interior in the thing with stove, sink, lid for both and I think he said it has a fridge. Carpets are a little damp and will get attention right away.
3) It has the typical fiberglass pop-top and the canvas needs replacing.
4) There are several OLD European stickers on the winshield. One is some kind of parking lot pass for a Swiss ski resort or something.
5) Has Type IV motor but the injection has been ditched and replaced with dual solex carbs. Are these an early factory dual carb (like Type III) set for the IV motor?
6) I think he said it has a MPH/Kph speedo but I don't recall.
Once I get a chance to get over and look it over I'll take lots of pics and study the thing real close. What else should I look for to determine if this was a tourist delivery bus, and what sort of options it had when new? _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

I'm in Florida and inspections are not required.
So are you saying it's a Euro-spec Westy and not part of the Tourist Delivery program? If so, WOW!! What's the worth? What ever it is He's got a deal here. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

How late?
Some things are 'rare' 'uncommon' but not worth the price to tow them across the street. _________________ OGJHC

Sounds like a Westfalia "Berlin" style camper........ they had a extended bumper and i think the cover was for propane tanks...

I would think in the US it would be rarely seen..... I've seen several in Europe... Always cool to be different than the rest though.... _________________ Peace,

definetly different and possibly desirable to the late bay crowd.
propane bottles on the front damn that would suck in a collision. _________________ OGJHC

No, that's the spare on the nose. The bumper is moved forward and the tire sits a bit lower than "normal" front mounted spares.
The propane bottles are under the chassis as normal.
Does Funky Green or anyone make GOOD body patch panels for Bays? It's gonna need a little bit of surgery. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

Mr. Gerson has just begun making some bay panels so hang on, most of the competitions stuff is absolute garbage.
The bus you describe may be a Berlin, or like the pic it could have a Helsinki or other Europe only layout in it, the spare mount was a late Europe only option performed by Westfalia, very cool nonetheless.
It likely has a 3 way fridge and double glazed windows as well.
As for rare? Well in NA it is, in Europe not so much, not rare as in big bucks but definitely unique and more functional than our import laws would allow, I'd roll one in a heartbeat. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Have you seen the new WW metal products? they have definetly stepped up their game a notch.
Their split bus front floors/ inner rockers and new doglegs including early fat lip are very nice! _________________ OGJHC

Yes I have and I agree it's much better, very promising, but so far it still leaves bay owners out in the cold with few options. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Nah, I saw this one a couple weeks ago. I didn't get a good shot of the front, but this is a Berlin.

Got pics finally. It's rougher than I though but for less money than it takes to fill up a Hummer H2, it'll be a good project.
These were all taken this morning when my buddy picked it up.

Nice, let's see the M plate (top of LH fresh air duct ahead of the speedo), it sure looks like a NA delivered bus with the bumper mod added. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'll have my buddy get a pic of the M code plate in a day or two. Based on window stickers and other details this bus has been in Europe. That's why I thought it may be a tourist delivery vehicle. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org
