I have this fantasy where I go to Brazil and buy one of these, part it out and bring it back to the states as scrap. Then I put it back together and re-tag it with a VIN from an old type II. Who would know?

You can see I've given this a lot of thought.

Yes, water cooled. The nose spare tire carrier is really the radiator.

I don't recall what they sell for stock in Brazil but they are imported and modified further (and to order) for the Brits but the cost is quite high.

WOW! I want one of those!

Why do they not import them to the US any longer? (Pardon me if that's an obvious question.)

That's so cool.

The old air-coolers could no longer meet changing EPA emission standards, hence, the vanagons and then the eurovans.

Slim to no chance any of these Brazilian jobs will come into the US:

> Federal import taxes on new imported vehicles too high.
> May not meet EPA emissions (?)
> May not meet current safety standards (?)
> VW company likely feels it's not worth the effort - perhaps can't sell for what they'd have to charge.

I believe it's the Danbury Ltd. company that does the English mods - charge something like $40k for base on up. From what I've heard, some Brits have had their bus really tricked out for over $100k.

Yes, but not a Golf engine. They use a 1.4 Total Flex (alcohol or petrol) Polo derived engine. Very small displacement but 80 hp and 0-60 in something like 16 seconds.

Pretty cool huh?

All forward control (passenger) vehicles (where, all or part of, the front seat occupants ride in front of the front axle line) do not meet current safety regulations. this came into effect in the 90's. Vanagons, and all the Japanese forward control minivans (Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Nissan all made very similar minivans at the time. They all looked like the Toyotas) were phased out of the US market around this time. Its also partly why none of the Japanese micro vans/trucks are road legal here.

First off, let me state, for the record, I am NOT one for doing stuff that is illegal. BUT:

Nothing says you can not buy all the parts and stick it into an old fat chick. There seem to be plenty of OK ones around in So Cali that you could graft into or out parts. Or any combination of swapping parts around. I see a guy not far from my house that seems to be able to build up nice loafs from bar bodies in a couple of weeks in his front yard.

You can bring the whole car in on carne (sp?) and destroy it or ship it out of the country in a year as required.

I like those buses. Not enough to have one though. Just like the split windows they are not modern and big enough for me to actually want one. But, if you really like one, sure, why not.

FYI: I see in Mexico water cooled vans similiar to those. You could get a dead one and yank all the parts you need and graft into a fat chick as well. Or buy one and drive it in, if that is possible, some way, some how that I do not know.

But, whatever, I am not THAT motivated. But:

"Just saying....."

Your department of Homeland Security would keep it.

There ARE rules about this. They come from the US DOT. You can go to their website and read all about it.

It would be the US DOT that would want to see it destroyed if you do not play by their rules.
