I have been searching both sites for 3 days now for threads addressing the r&r of those led indicator lites in the dash--I'm adding a check engine lite and need the specific type to get. all my searches come up with are wasserleaker diagnosis threads. the stickys dont have anything here either.
what type of leds are the turn signal, oil press and water temp indicator lites? radio shack says I need to be specific. todd |

Use the search, Luke.
Here is the thread to save you the trouble though...

If I understand you correctly you are refering to the lights such as the high beam indicator, O2 check light and oil pressure lights, but not the actual instrument lighting. Is this correct? _________________ I have never owned a VW I didn't like, but there have been a few Fords and Chevy's.

Mine is ultra-bright on both settings (propane and 12v), And it's never cycled off and on that I've noticed.
I didn't get your .psd link to work, Bird84 but here's what I did with my 84 Westy:
I replaced the LED with the blue Radio Shack LED part # 276-316. It was about $4 if I recall. Took about five minutes. You need to make sure you get the polarity right on the LED, though, or it Will Not Work. One lead is slightly longer than the other...and I can't remember for the life of me which way it went. Anyone? |
Pretty sure you can get what you want at Radio Shack as in this example for the indicator panel of a Westy. The "thin" side is the positive side, "thicker" side is negitive.

the idiota lanternes. yes the high beam, oil, alternator, glowplug and oxy sensor lites that no one has addressed yet. my topic got hijacked by christmas lites people. tim is the closest--thanks tim...that search luke thread wasnt it either---btdt - that fat sided lead led is in the bentagon book, with no numbers or even a modus operandi for elimination of dead lites. basically stated, "here is what is in your dash. now go study electronics somewhere" silly me, I gave one a tug and it pulled right out like a lite bulb. HAZZAH! serendipity! EUREKA! I found out something! I am probably going to use the radio shack # given earlier. THAT was on point. todd

I would just try one of these to see if it works for your application. Don't know for fact but would imagine that the circuitry has built in resistors so that the LEDs don't just burn out.

If the ends are too long you can just cut them to fit. Thought that you knew that these just pulled out of the instrament panel, the ones in the Westy fridge panel you have some un/re-soldering to do, if you want to change them.
Are you trying just to replace or are you going for that custom look? There's an electronics boutique local that sells LEDs by the truck load, every color and every intensity. Custom look maybe on the horizon for my Westy?
Take some pics and post them when you are finished and don't forget to record what part #'s worked for you so we'll all know.

thanks tim!
I am installing a check engine lite for my subaru, and the factory glow plug color, amber, will do nicely. I have to admit that I will probably led all the other instrument lighting as well....later. all I need is 2 more parts [shift boots and such] and I'll be able to turn the key for the first time. three weeks full time work. I hope she fires....thanks everybody....todd |
