Every so often, a simple 'thing' comes along and challenges your ego. I've found my latest 'humbler'. Has anyone installed headlight gravel guards before? They come with plenty of mounting brackets (six per lens), but I can't figure out where they mount. The brackets are too short to mount to the headlight retaining ring. I'm stumped, and would value any help.

They are going on a "70 DC, btw.

Thanks

I not sure about how they mount, but do you have any pictures of the covers and brackets, along with the headlights? That might help figure it out

if these are the wire mesh ones, i seem to remember the clips mount to the small phillips screws that attatch the headlamp retaining ring to the bucket. then the trim ring goes on, then the guards. and i think it didnt take six, but 3 or 4 per light. maybe you have different clips for different applications?

I have some on my bus right now. However, they only have three clips per headlight. It is hard to see and I can't remember, but it looks like mine are attached to the headlight retaining ring.

False alarm...I'm a tard. I had the brackets up-side down. My ego is in proper proportions now.

Thanks, volksterii and Malibu. I got it.

volksterii, it looks like we have the same ones.

Do you know this? I just went through the CA DMV laws for headlights and there is nothing talking about gravel guards. Only glazing covers.

I don't believe gravel guards are illegal, it is the smoked or plastic after market shields that are. I just got off the telephone with the NM State Police and they have stated that the wire mesh guards are not illegal. Admittedly this might only be for NM, heck I wish I could put wire mesh over my windshields. NM is the broken windshield capitol of the US. Law Enforcement won't even ticket you for it here. Might be a good thing to check with your local PD.

I looked into getting these for my car and was told they were illegal except for off road use because they block some of the light. This was the reason given to me. I have no reason to doubt it. But that was in Kalifornia.

Who told you this? I cannot find it anywhere in California's headlight laws...only regarding shields.

CHP told me when I was getting a fix it ticket fixed for a non-related offense. Maybe it is just something that cops can pull to annoy you I don't know. On a related note, I believe those Blue Dots in some taillights are illegal though I don't recall seeing that in a DMV handbook.

Yea someone on here pointed out that if your lights don't have the DOT stamp on them you can get cited for that, too!

chabanais was speaking of the blue dots that are placed in older vintage American metal or low-riders, sort of like this.
