I recently pulled my engine to put in a new clutch and a couple oil seals. It ran great before this procedure but started acting funny since. It will cruise all day at 60 but when I go to pass someone or pull up a long grade it starts to lose power. There is plenty of power getting up to speed and even when passing it will get up to a passing speed but cannot maintain it for very long before it starts hiccuping a bit and losing power.

The clutch is definitely ok.
I'm pretty sure the fuel filter is not clogged. I pulled the main line off the T and ran the fuel pump to make sure things were flowing good. It seemed fine.
Why would it only happen at hwy speeds and not normal driving around town? I'll throw a new filter on there just to make sure. This one does have over 12,000 miles on it now.
Could a manifold vacuum leak cause this? I reused my old gaskets when I put them back on because I couldn't get new ones in time. |

i will ask more specifically about "hiccuping a bit and losing power".
like a misfire?
or more sharp (on/off) like fuel cut off?
i've experienced both ignition & fuel problems that exhibit both these types of symptoms.
checked your timing AND overall condition of ignition AND fuel systems AND did a full tune up AND double checked all your electrics after install?
i assume
sounds like it's time to get busy
don't forget the strainer in the tank and your primary electricals _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport

The reason it could be your filter because at lower rpm's your carb bowls are filling and there is enough gas to keep things happy, but empty those bowls faster then they can fill (clogged filter) you will start running lean.. _________________ 82 Westy ☢, 66 Splitty ☮, 73 Type 181 ✠ |

by "hiccuping a bit and losing power" i mean that it will be accelerating strongly then just kind of cut off/on.
Thanks for all the tips guys.
I guess I'll get to work.
I'll make sure to post what I find out. |

Is the fuel line crimped or hose pinched? |

That sounds typical of a clogged filter _________________ 82 Westy ☢, 66 Splitty ☮, 73 Type 181 ✠ |

Make no assumptions about what has or has not been "checked recently".
If you have an aftermarket electric fuel pump (with that 2.0 longblock, I am assuming you do), those things can get all stupid on you under demand. This is dangerous, because it can give you a lean condition right when you really don't want it. You can have excellent fuel pump pressure at idle while testing it, but it starts a death arrythymia out on the road where you cannot see it or hear it even. Before you blame the pump itself, check the wiring carefully. I had a poor connection hidden under the plastic shielding of my cheap connector, and it gave me your symptoms then made my poor bus act like it was running out of gas finally. Everything checked out! Everything! Except that warm connector, wtf? _________________ www.itinerant-air-cooled.com |

my '69 had a clogged filter
the symptoms were:
normal power and acceleration until 55mph
then loss of power and speed until 45mph
normal power until reaching 55mph ...
45, 55, 45, 55
new filter 62mph steady
