|
|
To help alleviate stress-risers, I've always polished the sharp root edges of the pinion and ring gear root teeth with a fine emory bit in a Demel tool, but has anyone ever tried polishing the teeth faces ? I mean the side of the teeth that mesh.
Yes, I realize removing too much material can change the mesh of the gear teeth, but we're only talking POLISHING--not using an abrasive. |

Doing anything to the ring gear is a waste of time. The teeth on the pinion always crack first.
Many stock R&Ps that are used have teeth that are already polished from use. Cracks don't originate from the center of the tooth contact. Polishing there won't help. _________________

if pinion depth is wrong, the ring gear will eventually become sharp on the edges from the gear running off, aka heel and toe. _________________ 1963 chopped bug for sale

DO NOT TOUCH THE FLANKS!
These surfaces are lapped from factory to certain tolerance. If you go grinding by hand on the tooth flanks, might as well throw them in the trash as you just made them useless.
Are they not smooth enough for you? YOu got too much time on your hands, man. Why don't you grease the CV joints or the front axle bearings or something? |

I wasn't taking about "grinding", just polishing the tooth faces. But that's why I asked here---figured it could spell trouble doing so.

I use REM/ Isotropic Super finishing with my engines quite a bit. We've also used it for ring and pinions for road race cars with great results.

Isotropic superfinishing is the way to go.
I would love to have my own giant vibratory finisher. |

I was hoping you would chime in Jake. I seem to remember reading that you used this process, along with coatings, and cryo stuff. I'm lucky enough to have a shop the does the REM Process very close to me, and was thinking of trying it out on some tranny parts. Did you use the REM Process on just the ring & pinion, or did you use it on any of the drive gears, or diff parts as well? |
