Hi!
got a new job, work outdoors, and I can't post to much anymore.
Miss you guys and gals!

anyway, I posted this a long time ago and wonder if some fresh eyes can give me some ideas.

A few years ago I went Bostig and sent my auto from the east coast to German transaxle because the are the best....

....Now, many miles later, I have a leak. it comes out of the TC somewhere and sprays all over the engine compartment, eventual dripping on the exhaust and smoking.

I have a small car external cooler.

The only time it does it is after an hour or so of driving, and it does it more under load.

any ideas? I may just drop it of at a transmission shop, but I never have luck when I let someone else work on anything of mine, let alone a 25 year old converted VW.

TC seal? cracked TC? full rebuild?

If I decide to take it apart, what do I look for?

Thanks Samba!

I think you can double the TC seals.
It has been a long while since working on an auto.

Howdy,

I had this same problem on my Bostig (RG1).

...so I took a whole Saturday, a six pack of beer and a reuben sandwich, dropped the transmission (all the while leaving the engine in place) and replaced the torque converter seals. I put two of them in there.

I drove it around the block. Still leaking. Still spewing AT fluid all over the engine compartment--flinging it from the edges of the spinning torque converter. What a mess.

...so I took another whole Saturday, a six pack of beer and a reuben sandwich, dropped the transmission again (all the while leaving the engine in place) and replaced the torque converter.

That fixed the problem. I could never figure out what was really wrong with the old torque converter, but the new one (from Van-Cafe) worked great.

I've put about 2000 miles on it since then, under load, hot days, etc. No leaks.

sweet thanks.
I have two new seals in there now.
I will order a TC and seals and get it done.

THANK YOU!!!

by the way, I have the purple GT TC.

Bostig had a problem with GT auto's and discontinued there auto conversions until they got to the bottom of it. something with lack of endplay that destroyed auto's quickly.

I just did this 2 weekends ago. If you are mechanically inclined it's a day long job, but use a "real" transmission jack and don't attempt to use a regular floor jack.

You can rent a trans jack from just about any equipment rental store or if you are lucky, maybe you can find a local DIY auto repair shop so you have access to a lift.

The TC I got from Van Cafe was blue, type 7102, from Precision of New Hampton, not the purple one German Transaxle.

http://www.gopnh.com/Automotive-Manufacturer.cfm?Manufacturer=Volkswagen

It arrived in a PNH box, with PNH markings.

I should mention that you must make sure your TC end play is properly set. More often than not that means gently removing some material from the flywheel hole, where the TC nub fits. My new PNH TC demanded a little more material removal from the flywheel. I did this under consultation from Bostig.

That reminds me, I had to do that to, except I removed material from the tc.

It sounds to me like the main thing you need is at least one reuben sandwich and a 6 pack.
Possibly double that, but not a big deal either way.

Timely that this thread just came up. I just finished a 5,000 Kilometer trip and noticed I have the same kind of leak. Not much fluid missing but it sure makes a mess. I think I may just order a TC and seals and replace both at the same time rather than wrestle the trans out 2X if it turns out it isn't a "seals only" fix.

I appreciate the pictures kourt!

Update.
A kind samba member sent me a tc with free shipping.
I pulled the auto this morning in a couple hours.
The sad thing is, I see no problems.
Pics to come.
Do I put it back together with a new seal or do I use the new old tc the member sent me?

New seal and tc, 6 or so hours of work.
1 hour test drive, no leaks.
Let's hope it stays that way.
