Is the width of a Bug tow bar where it attaches to the beam wider than the Bus?

yes, by about 3 inches.

I'm translating that to mean that the BUS width is wider.??? correct

I've towed my bug up to Tahoe and Yosemite on several occasions , about 500 miles round trip with no problems. Just don't try to go in reverse.

But on the last tow trip the bar bent and crumpled around a slow turn and i determined it had stress, rust spot that decided to give out and i have to admit that my tow bar was 30 yrs old.

I dont see how a bus would be that much more of a load. But the next one i get i am going to reinforce it . And i kinda like jeremys' mods for the bus option. I may steal that idea and make something up.

mtnroads.. your newest find looks like the bus i have that i have to move soon... my next project.

I make an rear section for beetles that bolts to the two piece bus tow bar. The problem is I have to sell them as a whole kit and it makes it pricy. The last kit I sold was $300 shipped in the US.

Would you connect chains to this somewhere or direct to the bus frame.

I welded a safety chain to the tongue of the tow bar and connect that to the tow vehicle. I imagine an additional chain to the towed vehicle might be extra insurance .

I made some adapters for my Bus towbar i got from Jeremy...... it allows it to be used with a 2" narrowed bug beam...... I love it.. They slip into the beam mounts and are pinned in just like normal ..... very easy to make and the longer bus towbar is great for lowered bugs with narrowed beams... I've towed my show bug to several long distance events with no problems... Cool

No, fit's nicely and is solid with no slack... Cool I've used it many times and it works well....

I had the original tow hooks removed and replaced them with two receiver hitches which was both welded and bolted on.

There is a bracket that slips into these receivers to mount our motorhome tow bar.

I could easily have another slip in bar made to haul a small motorcycle or bikes on the front Which is plenty strong and safe.

This very handy if I have a breakdown. I just load the tow hitch in the car and go get it.

Here's the slip in bracket. When I am not using the tow bar you just un pin the bracket and the front looks normal.

U Haul car haulers are massively heavy - I have no doubt a U-Haul is 50 percent heavier than a standard issue car hauler. If I ever again need a U-Haul car hauler I will use at least a 3/4 ton to tow it.

you never see a used car hauler for sale. they don't cost anything when they are not in use, they are useful for so many things, you just buy once, cry once, and get on with your life.

mine has an 8,000 pound winch, full length e-track rails, ammo boxes for the tire baskets, solar chargers for the winch and trailer brake batteries, and I have plans for a ramp that can be mounted on either side or in back. it's like having a tow truck, if you have a truck.
