I would like to know about this rear hatch deal too. Also does anyone have a pict of the stove key? I have to admit it took me 2 years to find out about the oil filler Thanks to the samba I actually found out about it. I will have to check out the rear seat trick...that will make a perfect play area for the twins. |

Almost tossed mine a while ago, but ended up shoving it back in the glove box. Glad I did. _________________ '85 Westy |

Its debateable..
Which would lead to more value for a classic Westy Vanagon in 20 yrs..
"Includes original stove key"?
or
"Includes original fresh water tank drain cap"? _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

When I was a kid, and it was my job to fold down/up the rear bed when needed in my mom's passenger van, I was stoked to discover the little nubs on the walls to hold the 3 point seat belts out of the way. _________________ -James

My stove installation booklet says the stove key is to be used to install the stove burners when the stove is installed. After that it can be used to remove the burner so you can wash it in WORM water. Yuck, or Ach du liba _________________ 1987 Westy aka Moon Shadow

It is usually found next to the transmogrifier relay. _________________ 86 Westy Syncro |

Wasn't there a thread a while back, something about being able to operate the power windows with key out by flipping the high beam switch? I don't have power windows, but I seem to remember the thread. Might as well keep all the easter eggs in one basket.
Here ya go:

I was very excited to learn that. I use that regularly when camping and dont have my key in the ignition.
I also had no idea about the heated mirrors.
and until recenty, I did not know I could shut off the rear heater.
It's great to learn something new every day! _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

Ok, so what with the rear latch?
Spill the beans already.
I had an 85 Isuzu Trooper that you could bang on the smoker window over and over again until the latch pivoted up.
Is it somthing like that? _________________ 1987 Westy Auto Bostig 2.0 Ztec |

A comment about the stove key image:
When I posted this image I scanned the actual key at 72dpi. If you don't have your own key, print out the image at 72 dpi and use it as a full scale template to make your own. It is just made out of heavy gauge sheet metal and can be very simply fabricated with a hacksaw and file. In fact the only real important part is the spacing of the pins (bottom). 2 properly spaced nails in a chunk of wood would suffice.

hey dogberry
I went out to check my 69 camper today and looked at the hatch and locking mechanism
don't know if this applies to our vanagon secrets because I'm here on the mainland and the vanagon is back home
the '69 has a key and tumbler mechanism, but it is not a lock
the lock mechanism has a latch which can be disabled when the the locking mechanism is in the hatch closed position and the knob is moved
the latch and knob can be accessed from inside the camper when the hatch is closed, however, when the knob is used the key will not release the locking mechanism, but when the knob is moved the latch will be functional
I suppose this is to prevent someone with a key from opening the hatch while you are inside
no need for props because there are torsion bars to hold the hatch open
when I get back home I'll check out the vanagon for props. locks, latches, and knobs
why don't vanagons have torsion bars instead of leaking struts?
Aloha
