Here is the project. Hydro jacks, dial indicators, lathes, and a giant press. the finished product is great. Turns true and flat. Balance is good too. This guy has all the stuff to do the job. I took 30 pics if you want to see more.

This is all fine and well, but were the wheels in bad shape from years of curb-bumping?? Just curious, never seen this done before.

Don't know how they got that way. We noticed it when the wheels were put on the balance machine after the new tires. They were not totaled out or anything. But enough to get my attention with a concern that the condition may lead to a more severe problem in the tranny for example. I think it is a good way to save the OG rims in the absence of good replacements.

I've seen lots of wobbly stock wide-5 rims over the years. I have a couple of them on the back of my 62 right now, actually. Although I have two NOS rims painted up I need to get switched out with them. Never considered trying to get them straighted instead.

Yep it is Stockton wheel over in Stockton Ca. I thought it would be a good option too. The guy at Stockton said that years ago he would send away 200 rims like this a month to the scrap yard due to curb slapping and accidents. Now he searches for them to buy like the rest of us. Crazy. He also fabricates those Herbie wheels. One color powder coat about 1.50" wider. I paid $55 each to straighten.

I see he has taken some metal off the face of the center section, next to the bolt holes. What's the thought behind that? Also, does he re-attach the hub cap clips, or is that not part of the service?

So what is the process that he uses? It looks like maybe he shaves them til they are straight? I'm guessing he doesn't repaint your wheels when done.

Wow, like they weren't flimsy enough before thinning them out?!

They get bent from curbs, overheated and warped drums, and overtightening by nitwits with impact wrenches.

Check the drums for runout before fitting up a rim and bending it to fit a warped drum.

All great input. The HC clips stayed on the whole time. The lathe gripped the wheel on the outer lip only. The center section on 2 of the rims needed just a tiny bit removed to recreate a flat surface for the drum. What came off that area was a very small amount of paint and even smaller amount of metal. The newly clean metal area only went around about 75% +/- . I have new German drums on there. I am hoping that they are fairly flat. You are right on how flimsy the rims are anyway. I was standing there watching with my heart in my throat as the paint and metal was falling on the floor. I think that a repaint is in order. Still look good from a few steps back though. Thinking about powder coat for the wheels. That is next weeks chore.
