So I was able to get a panel in good shape and the right size to be able to do a correct restoration to this table.

I took it all apart, stripped the old cracked laminate off, sanded the board all up, filled two voids with bondo, sanded again, took the laminate strip off the doner board, sanded the back of it, coated the laminate and board with 3m spray glue, mated them together, let bond over night, routed the edge next day, cleaned all hardware, put the outside black bumper strip back on with heat gun, put all the hardware back in place....clean with WD-40 and enjoy Cool

Looks VERY good. I'm about to embark on mine that has the same kind of damage but bought a whole new table section piece with perfect laminate to replace it. I didn't have any scrap sections to use for repair like you did, but buying this small table leaf leaves me able to use my old one for small corner repairs elsewhere.

I saw you sanding the underside of the large table section and the underside now looks very good. Did you use anything else to remove the stains from the underside? Mine is pretty badly stained and I was planning to try mineral spirits and have looked into wood bleach, but am worried about harming the laminate accidentally in the process.

I sanded it to remove the years of smutz and palm butter - yuck! But it didnt take all of it out and it is "stained" to a certain degree still. No treatment after ward as Westfalia didnt, and if they did it was some kind of oil I bet. Be careful when sanding. You can not go nuts as the ply layers are not all that thick and you can burn through it and expose a lower layer messing it all up.

I think OG is zinc and galvy. I just did a light wire wheel on them to knock the paint and grime off - making sure not to remove the OG coating.

I went a different way...stripped the Formica and am replacing with wood veneer. Classic not plastic. I chose Red Oak and I'm going to stain with Golden Oak. It is on 2'x8' rolls and cuts easy & clean, great stuff.

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2213&site=ROCKLER

Also ordered 3/4" black T-moulding 12' for about $18.00.

Relaminated Westy cabinets with pressure senstive wood veneer from Rockler.com. I have two days into this project, once the cabinets are covered, I'll stain.

How expensive is that Rockler stuff?

I saw it once and did not like the "compterized pattern) of the wood grain.

Pricey, but nice.

If I were doing a full resto to the 77 then vainer would be the only option. I love how nice you can make that stuff. Looks like Mr. Monopoly's bus for sure.

But alas I took the Plastic-Fantastic route from the 70's. That ways I wont be heart broken when the kids start to booger it up.

Keep us posted!
