|
|
I'm really interested in seeing more photos of the "delivery day" at the docks, because it seems to be a good way to really get a sense of what dealers/distributors ordered from VW. One can assume dealers ordered "standard" cars for their lots, as well as special orders (perhaps the more expensive deluxes or campers?) for customers. I was surprised to only see one 21 window in this bunch... if most dock photos showed this same scene, that would support the "ratio" of sunroof to hardtop deluxes being reversed from the 50s (more sunroof deluxes) to the 60s (more hardtop deluxes).
Anybody got any other "dock" photos?

Wow! I'm guessing those Flip-hatch Westfalias were SO33s. Great shot. |

It came off the back of a pamphlet IIRC.
The overhead view you posted above it has always had me wondering
what the story is with the group of trucks in the top right. Are they
all in primer? They look odd to me... |

As far as Westfalias go, this has got to be one of the top pictures ever.
I know this is in the gallery somewhere, sorry and thanks to whoever I saved it from a few years ago... |

I think the ratio probably changed due to the common belief that soft tops always leaked. When working for a VW shop I got to see a lot of bugs and buses, a few still driven by their original owners. One time an old guy came in with a CLEAN 64 13 window. I had my 63 that day in the lot and we got to talking. I was telling him I wish mine was a 23 instead of the 15. He told me when he when he went to buy the bus the dealer kept trying to push a 21 on him. He said he wanted the deluxe for the extra window but not a sunroof or sky lights because they leaked. He said he had to go to several dealers before he found the 13 he purchased.
My dad told me the same thing. Not a VW but when he bought his first new car (an early 63 ford galaxy 390 4 speed posi which he ended up selling for $60 in 71 ) my aunt went with him and tried to convince him to buy a convertible. I asked him why he didnt get the vert and he said the same thing. Most soft tops started to leak after a year or so and since he wanted to keep the the car for a long time he didnt want it to rust.
Since I dont have a sunroof bus, do they really leak? I have a canvas sunroof on my 60 bug and it does not leak. What year did they change from canvass to vinyl in the bus? Did the early vinyl crack and leak more causing people to want a bus with no sunroof? _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild

33s could also have come with the small tent... not sure they ever came with all 4 mounts though? The only reason I said 33 was because I can see the table on the one that is suspended by the crane, and they're too late to be 23s.
I'd never seen the early black & white Westfalia group pic. If that were in color, I would have fainted. |

I'm guessing there was one Canadian who was pissed when half his car didn't show up?
The above dock shots are some of my favorites, esp the color photos. Keep 'em coming. _________________ It's not how wide your hatch is, it's what you do with it.

No mirrors or sealed beams either. Gotta give them something to do at the dealer, I wonder what the PDI charge was back then? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Or how about the glass transport truck/single cab at the top. I have never seen one of them in any book anywhere. _________________ Home of the one true split Bus Motorhome |
