I prefer my Haynes manual over the Bentley. I'm just used to them I guess. usually the first thing I get when I get a "new" car is the Haynes manual for it. my Bentley lives under the backseat, used it maybe twice in two years. |

I think the one thing people forget about the Bentley is
it was written for mechanics, not owners
All shop manuals assume you already have the skills |
If that was a response to my criticism of the engine chapters' layouts then I'd have to reply that I'm well aware that the manual is written for mechanics and as such the engine chapters' layouts are a slap in the face. Attempting to find specific information about a specific engine that you are currently working on is an exercise in page turning as you are constantly flipping through the pages of the other three engines that you're not currently working on in order to get to the next bit that covers the engine that you are working on...
At some point I will bust the binding and make photocopies of each of the engine section, have fun with a hole punch and loose leaf notebook, and stick all the info together for the air-cooled, all for the diesel, etc... |

First just got an email that the Bentley is $69.00 US which is good BUT the S&H thru a courier is $40.00. That is NOT good. I've asked them about mailing it.
Yes S'sWWs is still for sale at the right price but I'm not going to give it away. Don't have to sell, want to sell to get another Vanagon that is being worked on now. Yes I have had 3 inquiries, one bought another van on his way to see mine, other one is far away, waiting for a reply to an email I replied to.
I really must get it listed some other sites too. If I manage to sell it before the next Vanagon is ready, well I still haven't sold my old Toyota.
While you may think having no sense of smell is okay, I'm petrified of fire as I can't tell there is any smoke until it starts choking me. The same for chemicals, etc.... I've burned many a pot of potatoes/pasta when I've forgotten I'm cooking. Now I automatically put a timer on when I'm cooking. Once a long time ago while I was cruising on my sailboat, I met someone who liked the smell of skunk. WEIRD. I've been conditioned to believe that a rose smell is good and a skunk smell is pda!
Thanks for the additional information. Will check it out. Yes I do have a laptop and was able to pick up WiFi on my trip. Just learning to use memory sticks. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Sez who?
I happen to be one of the professional techs who this format is designed for. It works, it's actually a lot more useful than the heavily text-laden format of Haynes, who I do think do a good job if they would just remember to turn on the flash when they're taking pictures. But all that step-by-step is so much verbiage when you know what you're doing, just want to see an exploded drawing and a few specs. The diagnostic procedures are Bentley's hat-tip to publishers like Haynes, a few things are peculiar to the marque but they are generally of little use to techs who understand how things work; logic tells us how to troubleshoot. Despite the seeming superstition that pervades the impressions of non-technical enthusiasts of any vehicle brand (the dispersion of which has always been my main motivation for posting here), most all cars of a given decade share the same basic systems and have about 95% in common and only 5% difference in the way things work.
I do agree with Andrew, I would like each engine type to be its own chapter, but what would really help me is if all the engine tech specs were listed in one place: dimensions, torque values, etc. That's the main reason I own any tech manual in the first place. That and wiring diagrams, which is an area where Bentley has no equal. The current-track format is the most comprehensive, data-rich and understandable wiring format in existence. I've seen 'em all and none even approaches the richness and comprehensibility of this format. Whip out the Mitsubishi shop manuals, for just one example, and you'll run screaming back to Bentley.

"Timwhy" don't make me get you in trouble AGAIN! Next time I'll ask for you to be removed, not just your insults.
Poor misunderstood "Timwhy" seems to have it "IN" for me! Ignorance is definitely not bliss.
I had a question and I asked it. Should have asked it long time ago, if I had have realized it could irritate you.
I'm glad I asked it, I suspected I knew what it was but I wanted to get the correct information. Bite me

About 20 years ago, I got my first copy of "How to keep your Volkswagen alive" It might be the most important book in the known universe.
Second is "Guzziology" which is the bible for Moto Guzzi... _________________ Jordan

"Again" ?
You are confusing me with someone else, but you already know that.
Sorry if you were insulted so easily, I thought that your question was pointless and you would have been better off doing a search for the Bentley.
And no, I don't have it in for you or anyone else here on the Samba. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

At least no one is talking about trading in their Vanagon for a Bentley, that would be sacrilegious. A tight and loyal group we are |

Ok. Maybe I should have said, "I couldn't rebuild my aircooled with the info in the Bentley". I consider myself pretty competent with my hands inside the engine given proper instructions. You have to admit that they leave plenty of room for your own judgment. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. I did a search as I thought it was a pretty much talked about entity. My search showed nothing but perhaps I didn't spell it correctly. So me bad! _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Agreed. I literally learned to read by looking at that book when I was three!
Pity I didn't have a chance to actually USE it until I was 18... |
