Any recommendations for the insulation on the engine lid? I saw this on Secondskin's website, looks pretty slick but it's 3/8" thick, the open cell foam motormat is 1/2" thick. Will this be too much? I took a measurement and it appears that there is about 1/4" to work with, wondering if this foam will compress enough when I put the clips in.

Are you looking at using that on the bottom side of the lid or the top? If the top, I don't see a problem. On the bottom, I'm not too sure I'd use it, due to it being a rubber based foam. The original material was a fiberglas batting like material, that is basically fire resistant, covered in thick aluminum foil. Right now, there are several people looking for a replacement for the foil, as that's what normally goes first. If anybody has a good solution, I'd like to hear it, as my own car could use a replacement foil section. I have thought about that insulated fiberboard stuff, but there's no way I'd use up a 4 by 8 foot sheet. Rolling Eyes

This is a bit pricey, but it works (and looks) really good

http://www.bmpdesign.com/product-exec/product_id/1207/search_year/1985/search_model/22

This enough for two engine lids.

Yeah, I saw that thread I just wanted to know more about this particular heat shield. Probably should have had a more specific title Embarassed .

Skinman - nice job on yours, I liked the Home Depot approach!

The one I have in the pic is a "Motor Mat" from Second Skin Audio and designed to withstand 500F plus quite a bit of sound deadening, I was talking about the inside portion (directly on top of the motor). But now I'm thinking that maybe that's a little overkill, especially if I plan to put a little sound dampener on the interior portion of the lid/truck area. I think I will take a trip to the Depot this afternoon Laughing

Thanks fellas

I was a little skeptical of water heater insulation, just because of the temp rating - maybe 140 degrees?

Under my engine cover all the fiberglass had fallen into the engine,it was every where! I just applied the Dyna-mat plus to the under side.

The topside is still the OG cardboard, just cleaned off all the greasy buildup and sprayed on clear coat Krylon, looks like new, almost!

I used this with spray glue. Worked great and the original clips worked. It's enough for probably two lids.

Ok, that's what I used under my pressboard on the floor of my 71 Notch, and under the carpet (in the rear) of my 65 Notch. I was just wondering if anyone had found a thick foil to use as a replacement for the old stuff. My insulation is still really nice and in good shape, but the foil has seen better days. I might have too use some of that 22 gauge aluminum I have here, and fake it.

One option Bob; alum foil backed insulation half way down. .033" thick.

I made a new cover for the insulation on my sqb from aluminum flashing used by roofers and contractors. It comes raw or painted, true you may need to flatten it as it comes in a roll, but golly-gee whiz it sure does work good and will not bankrupt anyone. Just my 2 pennies! Good luck!

Here's the engine lid restoration for a 1963 T34 Coupe that I did for about $25 via the Home Depot aluminum insulated roll. The roll did two engine lids and doesn't look at all like bubble wrap. The only difference from original is this pattern is a square while the original is a diamond. Spray glue over the edge for the 1963-64 models and tucked inside the lip for 1965-69 models. Silver/aluminum spray paint for the handles & clips gives the "new look" again and is very easy to do. The whole process took less than two hours. Wink

Finally got mine done a few weeks ago. Checked out the stuff from Home Depot and I was a bit disappointed. Mostly because it was like 20 or 30 feet long and since I only had to do the one lid, it seemed like a bit of a waste.

Decided on this stuff from Second Skin. Two layers of foil w/ the insulation/sound deadener in the middle.

Really like it so far, I think it quieted the engine noise a little from the inside.
