Porsche Space Saver, removing tire from rim?

I got some Porsche space saver rims, the red powder coated alloy ones. How do you get the tires off the rim? There is next to no drop center in the rim, so I can't lever them off with 10" irons. I took them to two tire shops and they can't do them either...

I have personally never had to remove them, but call Gary at Parts Obsolete (Phone 503-835-2300). He has done many of them and could probably tell you the trick.

To put it in perspective, I have the No-Mar Classic Tire Changer and I bent two tips trying to lever the bead above the rim.

Parts Obsolete is down the road from Portland, I will send him a note, thanks!

I got the first one off.

The trick is to get the opposite side of the tire held down (using 3 special clamps, see below), use two 16" irons on the opposite side and the use the special no-mar lever and it pops right off.

Here are the hold down clamps that I used

Probably the toughest tire I will ever pop off a rim. The local shops wouldn't touch them....

I got 16's, if I would do it again, I might look at 17's. The rims are 16x5.5, the stock vanagon width (14x5.5) so it is hard to find slim tires.

I got the adapters from Loogy, they are H&R from Germany, good stuff, they are hub centric, come with the right nuts for the Porsche wheels and are 25mm thick. With an ET30 wheel, this is enough offset to run big brakes and not worry about the ball joints getting in the way, though I am stock brakes for now.

I got the rest of those bastards off this weekend, what a battle. The tires simply won't drop into the rim since the space saver tire folds back on itself, so you can force the tire down, but it doesn't really give you any clearance. Whats worse, you can't even break the bead properly.

By luck there is a powder coater a few miles away from me and the red wheels will be powder coated in a blue-gray color reminiscent of older VW's.

I hope they turn out well. Photos in a few weeks when I get them back.

I have to order some tires now....

i'm having a hell of a time trying to remove the porsche spare 944 wheels (the outlaw wheel)
tire shops won't touch them and they are super hard to cut off

My technique for levering them off was to use the clamps as shown in the previous thread, and then just use a regular set of tire irons to lever the space saver tire off.

No shop wants to touch these, if they have ever done it before. I used my no-mar tire rig to get them off.

It will still be hard to the get the tires off, but not as hard as those old space savers....

Ya I found a space saver from a A8 with a shredded tire that was perfect for over big brakes, tire shops all told me they weren't worth the hassle. I wanted to find it a new donut, big $$$...

i've not had a hassle getting the tires off of space savers, these are 996 turbo space savers, 6j x 16"

i ran these on my old split bus, it was not an issue to get the tires off

it's not as pretty so you wouldn't want to run 4. but the Audi A8 (aluminum chassis) has a 17in space saver spare, that has a large Diam and big inner diam to fit big brakes and ....
it fits in the clamshell

I like the look of the 996 turbo SS wheels and the OPs blue wheels. Not sure if the Doka is a syncro but do the hubs need to be bored out? What tire did you go with for the 5.5" width? What about the red turbo wheels?

My doka (white with the blue wheels) is 2wd. Obviously, since they are Porsche bolt pattern, you need spacers/bolt adapters.

Loogy, aka http://www.t3technique.com/ sells the adapters. While you are at it, upgrade the fronts to studs and get aluminum cap nuts.

My adapters were 25mm thick.

BTW, you MUST be careful with the Porsche space savers. There is one part number for many different sized wheels and offsets. It has been a while since I checked, but I believe that the offset is cast into every wheel. You have to get an identical set to save yourself from compatibility issues in the future.

Also the Porsche space savers sometimes have TWO valve stems. One for inflation, the other for deflation (sucking out the air). Change out those stems.
