Love this song. My wife & friends are, on the other hand, getting rather sick of it _________________ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Gah, that's awful. Truly the late '70's were a difficult time, aesthetically speaking.

It's good to see there's another SCOTS fan here. Camel Walk is another good one. No vanagon content, but good none the less. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin |

Love the song, and the subsequent video. Stumbled on it searching for stereo info. Nice to hear it's from someone else on the Wet Coast too!

Yes, a "mickey of rye". Canadian whiskey. Think Bourbon but less Kentucky and more Saskatchewan, eh! Not a great sippin' whiskey but good with ginger ale or coke (at least the cheap stuff).

Artist is from Victoria, BC and he's singing about Ukee and Long Beach...Uclulet and Pacific Rim National park on west coast Vancouver Island. Hence...the Canadiana. _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

Exactly. The area around Uclulet is probably the best fishing on Vancouver Island, with great salmon, and halibut. The artist sounds like he might have worked as a guide or at least fished with the locals a lot. Surprising he doesn't talk up surfing in the song...sounds more local than the typical tourist surfer that breezes through there in a westy.

Songs about Vanagons should be a ballad, not a hard rock or gangsta rap inspiration. Maybe I'm showing my age, but there you have it.

*Maybe* you're showing your age? I think it's a fun song that gives an ironic tip of the hat to pseudo gansta rap and I'm pushing 40! Kinda like what The Gourds did with Snoop Dog's "Gin and Juice". Sorry Kenny G didn't make an appearance! _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

I am rather old-fashioned in many ways--including in what I drive! I don't mind you all enjoying that song, I just prefer to do it without profanity or anything scatological. I've done... a lot... of Vanagon songs...
Sample:
Another One Fights the Rust
Saw her sitting there by the road
And my eyes popped from my head!
Wife wanted a new minivan,
But I bought her this instead!
There were puddles between the rear tires
And the grill had lost a slat!
Tent had holes and the screen was gone,
But there's much more wrong than that!
Another one fights the rust!
Another one fights the rust!
There's a big spot here, and a small spot there,
Another one fights the rust!
Hey! I bought a Vanagon!
Another one fights the rust!
The fridge is broken and the stove don't work,
And the intake ports are gone.
The instrument console's really shot,
And needs parts shipped straight from Bonn!
Transmission's blown, the heads are toast,
Needs fuel pump, lines, and shocks.
Got it home, the tires blew, so I've got it up on blocks!
Another one fights the rust!
Another one fights the rust!
There's a big spot here, and a small spot there,
Another one fights the rust!
Hey! I bought a Vanagon!
Another one fights the rust!
Wife can't talk below a scream,
The kids are really scared.
I'm gonna finally have my dream
Once I get it all repaired!
I think about her all the time,
Won't let this thing go sour!
We'll all be happy camping soon,
At fifty miles an hour!
Another one fights the rust!
Another one fights the rust!
There's a big spot here, and a small spot there,
Another one fights the rust!
Hey! I bought a Vanagon!
Another one fights the rust!

Hey,
Mica here. I actually spent 7 seasons living in Ucluelet, working as a fishing guide with the Canadian Princess. I met my partner there and now (13 years and two kids later) we live in Victoria and we drive a motherfuckin' Nissan Pathfinder! I know, I know...I should punch myself in the face. We only had a front bench in our 84' and the rear was all bed. So, when we had our second kid we made some changes. ONE DAY my Wife and I will pick up a Syncro and tour North America with it....re-trace the Baja route that was our last epic adventure in our 84'.
Funny thing about The Vanagon Song is that after having a couple of puffs and a glass of wine with my Wife, I sat down and wrote\recorded the song that night. Having never written a rap song and knowing that it was very tongue in cheek, I didn't think it would catch on. But, I feel very honored that it did and that some people from different places and different walks of life have gotten some enjoyment out of it. It is by far the most downloaded song I have up on my site.
BTW, I see you're from Courtenay! I graduated from Vanier in 93'.
Peace out! ~

I have a bone to pick Mica. I listened to the song 2 days ago and curses, it's in my head. That would just fine except for the fact that I've been muttering under my breath "I drive a motherf..ing vanagon..." That again would be fine if I didn't have four and eight year old girls in the house. Ha.
I believe my wife has uttered those words a few times over the last decade too, but strangely I believe she meant something different...
Love the song.
Cheers,
Dennis. _________________ Cheers,
