ok, ive had my eye on this for a couple years and now see they have a distributor in Cali. ive done a bit of searching and i cant believe nobody has done a review of this piece.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=812628
seems like a great price for what it is vs. the systems that are > $1000
i built a 1955 stroker for my bus with stock ride height and am currently running J-tubes with a crusty ass extractor and SQP.
i would appreciate any feedback. i dont really understand what they mean by "will fit strokers with stock rods??"
thanks in advance,

Looks like a nice exhaust. But...No heaterboxes possible. That's wat makes them less interesting for me.
Ik like the OG look vs RVS very much. |

I run that exhaust and it is awesome. It sounds great and looks great too. As far as heater boxes go I have seen here that Mr. Lee has just made a system for type 1 that works with heater boxes. Maybe he is in the process of doing the same for the Type 2 exhaust.
Here is the link to the Type 1 exhaust that accepts heater boxes.

You should read his buyer/seller feedback. He has received high praise for his products and customer service. I know I have contacted him and he was great to deal with.
Best of luck with your decision.

I think it's a backdoor way of saying it won't fit engines that end up wider because of longer cylinders or excessive shims. The exhaust studs will be too far apart for a jigged set-up like that. |

I installed this exhaust on my Crew Cab last summer. I love the look and sound. The only issue I have is it does not clear the empi spin on filter I currently have. I've got the shortest filter I can find and it's still to long to install without unbolting the exhaust. |

How does the sound compare to a single quiet pack muffler? _________________ '67 Double Door Camper |

Hi all,
I am also interested in any feedback from people who have installed the Vintage Speed exhaust on an early bus, or other upright motor VW's.
I am building a 1850cc, single port, mild cam engine and want a somewhat original looking exhaust/ muffler; fairly quiet and that does not limit the flow of the 1850cc's. No heater boxes is OK with me.
thanks and aloha,
Jmo |

I've got the Vintage Speed exhaust for lowered buses on mine. I love it. Sounds good, relatively quiet, and looks good too. Definitely worth the money IMHO. |

I was in Taiwan last month and stopped by Vintage Speed to check out the shop and the factory and it was very impressive. Ming Tang Lee is really interested in producing a quality product and he seems to respond to his customer's individual needs. I am not into big engines, but if I was, I would have brought home an exhaust in my suitcase because it sounded great as we were speeding around Taichung.

Installed it on my 1968 stroker and love the sound and look. Only negative, which he seems to be working on now, is the lack of heater boxes. _________________ Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation eff' leans on the doorbell!

I have one fitted to my 2007, sounds great, not too loud and the fit was perfect, just a little bend of the rear valance as I wanted more gap between the valance and the exhaust
Hope thats enough pics for you,,lol

I just bought the exhaust modified for heaterboxes recently. Looks absolutly perfect and a'm very pleased with Mr. Lee as a supplier. It's the best bang for the bucks for me.
I haven't fit it yet, i haven't heard the sound yet. But i'm sure it will sound great. |

Lee from Vintage Speed is very responsive to customers needs. I have one of his heater box mufflers here I'll be using on another engine. Also have Gersons DC here with a 1776 with one of Lees mufflers and it runs and sounds great, had a little hick-up but Lee took amediate care of it.
Stand up company, great customer service, backs his product. Vintage Taiwan will be at Bug-In 35 next weekend if anybody local wants to hands on the products _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

Sorry guys, reading above it is not clear to me. Has anyone actually installed the Vintage Speed exhaust with a 49-67 Type 2 bus and heat exchangers? I'm currently building a 2007 cc for my stock height '67 Standard, and would like to use the Vintage Speed exhaust if it will work without sheetmetal alterations. If someone has already done this and has photos, I'd be very interested in seeing and hearing about how it has worked out. _________________ '67 VW 11-Window Standard Bus, 2027cc Stroker with Dual 40 IDF Webers |

Hi all,
Just got the exhaust system from Vintage Speed. Mr. Lee has been great and made custom modifications for heat risers and wider port spacing.
Going in a 60' bus with a 1850cc (76 x88) motor, j-tubes/ no heater boxes.
The headers interfere with the stock lower tins, thermostat and bracket.
Does anyone have experience or advice on fitting/ modifications to the tins, thermostat and bracket. I already have the industrial heat shields.
Getting really close to running and am really excited. Thanks for all you help!!!
thanks,
Jmo |
