Hi guys
I've had some trouble with my beetle recently, it was getting very jerky at low speeds, anyway I took it to a vw meet about 80 miles away and drove it quite fast down the motorway, averaging about 65-70 mph on the whole trip, and I also took it up to 80mph just to see if it'd make it with my stock 1300 dual port.
Anyway, disaster! swapped drivers just after coming off the motorway, and up the first hill my beetle started making a ticking noise sort of like an air leak or something blowing, and it struggled really bad in hills, no torque whatsoever . We ran out of petrol 10 miles later because my fuel gauge is dodgy but luckily I'd put a can of petrol under the bonnet so we just about made it home at 2am.
My beetle averaged 18.9 mpg that evening.
What do you guys think the problem could be?
Thanks

Nothing wrong stands out visually on the engine? Loose wires, missing spark plugs, etc. You have me stumped |

Checked all wires, checked the spark plugs, they all spark ok. However testing the car just letting it idle, first time it was running fine, sounded just as before, then stopped the engine, started again, only fired on 3 cylinders, 5 minutes later it was back on 4 I was wondering faulty ht leads, but they look brand new it's got quite a few new parts, new dizzy (009 with electronic ignition) new airfilter, the carb is only 1 and a 1/2 years old...

A ticking noise like an air leak....
Sounds like you may have a loose head. Maybe pulled a case stud.
You have probably already done a lot of damage by continuing to drive it. That will torch the head and the cylinder.
Time to pull it and tear it down and see what you have. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Did you, or were you able to check to see if the heads are correctly tightened? My friend had something like this happen to him, and it turned out to be that his exhaust to heater box connection was bad and it was leaking which caused him to lose power and make a ticking sound. |

Really?
My exhaust was missing a bolt to the heater box, if it's something that simple that'd be great! _________________
