Did you index them the correct way? Sounds like you need to go the opposite way you did. Or you need to index the inner splines, too.
Hard to say without a whole lot of information to go on.

I think that your first guess, as that is what it is, is the most likely circumstance.

Still waiting on those pix...

But without them, the question "is the rear under load when you make the height judgement?" comes to mind, (i.e., with the motor in).

And I am curious as to which end of the torsion bar did you "click" up two splines.

Still, it's rather difficult to nail down your problem without them pictures Kid-o-Steel Wink .

(Shift key + letter key= Capital letters; these are most often found at the beginning of each sentence and also grace the first letters of Proper Nouns. TheSamba has a grammar tutor somewhere on here Smile .)

Is the motor installed?

Have you driven it around to let the suspension settle?

In my experience, a good place to start is indexing the spring plate to 6 degrees. like in this pic, using an angle finder located on the og uncut portion of the spring plate. Ofcourse the bus needs to be level from start. this will give you a real close balance to 3 1/2" dropped spindles. If you are adjusting your beam lower, you would need less angle.

Sometimes it takes a bit for them to settle after you make adjustments. I usually drive around the block before I decide whether it is low enough Cool

Yes, but the adapters are probably cheaper.

Thing drums, you need the better stopping power than bug pads.

It is my understanding that thing drums do not use wider shoes, only that the drums are wider. Therefore, no added stopping advantage. If you want better stopping power, install a late (68& up) front wheel cylinder in there, or use type 4 drums and adapters.

I am running Thing drums in the rear and also later cylinders and super beetle shoes. I believe they are super beetle anyways. Really no huge difference in the shoe sizes. Most of the stopping power is in the front anyways.

The Thing drums are about 1/4" wider than 4 lug bug drums and the wide 5 adapters, so make sure you have enough room. I just put a set on my 65 Micro, yes shoes and wheel cylinders are the same size as the 68 up bug. I ended up putting super front wheel cyls (23mm instead of 17mm)same as type 3 also, on and brakes are much better now.

I have seen some different thicknesses in the 4-5 lug adapters, too. Either 3/8" or 1/2". That will make a difference.

In the first lowered bus I built I did not know about the need to use late beetle front wheel cylinders. The brakes sucked. A friend enlightened me, and what a big difference it made.
