What does the type VW 1/11 mean? I will look Saturday when I pick car up for the serial number. Is it stamped inn the upper corner of the tag?
Appears to be really complete minus floor pans and one rear turn signal.
Thanks for the response. This is a great site. |

A little digging tonight revealed that most Eoropean beetles in Sweden were registered as Type 1/11 Limousine. And also The first production model of the civilican Volkswagen “sedan” was built in 1945, after the end of WWII. It was based on Porsche’s original “protoype 1″, and so was designated as a “Type 1″ vehicle. Production models that resulted from modification and changes to the original concept of Protoype 1 were also classed as “Type 1″ vehicles, and model/version numbers were added to their type designations to distinguish them. Beetles (Type 11), SuperBeetles (Type 15), Ghias (Type 14), Hebmullers (Type 14A), and Things (formally designated as Kurierwagens – Type 18 ) were all based on the original Type 1 prototype.
So the type 11 merely stood for Beetle _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Thanks flyboy161, Just found out the VIN for my new beetle.
Number is 1794249 stamped on tunnel and looks to be the same on VIN tag. It is hard to read. I will e-mail the for the history on the car and see what they have to say. it shows just over 54000 on odometer. Last registered in 1972. Been sitting ever since.
Thanks for all your help, what is the book everyone is talking about with production numbers and changes? Can you buy this book? |

Ah, no need to buy. Take a look in the archive and technical tabs up above. There is a wealth of information there including a book called Progressive Refinements. Also there is a VIN listing that shows chassis, motor numbers and VIN numbers by month. It's how I determined your info. A good couple of books you should get are the Idiot Manual by John Muir and a Bentley repair manual for 1958-1960 VW type 11's. I'd be interested in seeing photos when you get your car. I'm just up in middle Georgia if you need anything. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Will be picking my 58 up Saturday.
Here are a few pictures prior to pickup.
It was last registered in 1972 been sitting a long time.
Saving another.
Low mileage for a 58?
Don't know what this roller is but it's on both doors.
Any info? |

Anybody know what these numbers mean.? They are stamped to the right of the engine serial number. Where can I find the chart of changes that I see a lot of people using to find the finer details about their cars? New to using this web site.

Finally got around to cleaning out my 58. Was lucky enough to find this little gem.
Now the question, clean it or leave as is? |

For the rear engine compartment right?
If so, then I can tell you that I know of nobody who makes the proper style for our cars. Your best bet would be to put and add up on the samba. I had the right 1/4 portion that was broken in my car that I had to replace. Was lucky enough to, after posting a WTB add, to have a guy email me with one that he pulled from a car he was parting out. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

Finally got to pull out the back seats, nothing left of the fronts, but I think this will get me a good sample of the color I need to find..
They used some trimmings it appears to line them.
