Fuel Pumps!
Not sure if this has been covered yet but I was just thinking about it as I looked over a couple 36ers I had sitting in the garage - one a May 58 and the other a November 59. It should be noted that the 58 and 59 pumps, while almost the same, can be differentiated by the the internal inlet filter on the 59 pump (as indicated by the bolt on the top cover next to the outlet fitting). Here is how I see the dating:
36 horse fuel pump: July 1955 - August 1958
36 Horse Fuel Pump: August 1958 - August 1960
|
Thanks for posting this info! I went out to double check my fuel pump, and it is the correct one for a Jan 58 Beetle..

so, it seems that there is a difference in years, although i was told that they were all the same if you got Hella snowflakes ... |
I am not certain about the last three being 226? I can't really see it that well due to the corrosion? This particular reflector "passender side" has "T-1" and "HELLA" stamped below the part#, and the letter "M" stamped at the very bottom. The other reflector "drivers side" is the same except it has no "T-1" and the part# is 111-945-225. I wonder if the "M" is an inspectors stamp as I talked anothe 58 owner, and His has the letter "D"? His Car is a July 58 build?
"M" at the bottom inspectors mark?
T1 and HELLA? The "T1" is not stamped on my "Drivers" side, OBEN and the "VW" logo are stamped at the top but are hard to see because of the corrosion? _________________ 1958 Agave Beetle (0\_!_/0)

I need some info from you 58/59 owners. If you happen to know if your VW has the Original Snowflakes, and can check the stampings on the "Reflector", I need to know if these were date specific like the Headlight buckets? The Reflector on mine has the Oben and VW stamp, along with the part # 111-945-226 with "S-12" right below and the letter "M" at the very bottom. My Car is a Jan 58 build. I may have to replace one due to corrosion, and am curious if these stampings are all the same or specific to what month your Car was built....
Thanks

it could be, but you really won't know till you get the Birth Certificate. Well it looks like by March they had moved the stamp location and had a different inspector? I went to "OldBug" and saw this pic of the trunk area of a Dec 4th 1957 build, and it has the "55" stamp, and what appears to be a "5" where mine has the "B"?

As for the date, I believe a consensus was reached earlier in the thread: The year date was August 1st, but changes didn't necessarily correspond to the year change date for '58-'59. There were myriad changes over the course of two years I'm not even sure if there were any major changes that took place on August 1st save the marketing materials.
I need to look deeper into this, but I think the mid-year jumble finally settled out for the '61 model year ('60s are still very one-year-only-ish, but they have considerably more in common with the later cars than the earlier ones like the '58-'59s and are thus different enough to not be included in the '58-'59 schema). _________________ Jason Hopper

Alot of parts on the car are date stamped 3/58. So I am sure it's an early March built car. All 5 stock rims are date stamped 3/58 the speedo is 3/58. The drums are 3/58 (in a box being stored).
So I guess they are just inspection stamps or something like that??? |
Your Car was roughly built on March 12 1958? Where are the "4" and "K" located, are the near the right inspection cover, or down by the rib area like Mario's Oct 58? You would think the parts would be Feb 58, as it has been stated in other threads that parts were sometimes 1 to 3 months behind so there would not be a shortage issue? My speedo, and Headlight buckets are 12/57, the Generator is a 01/58 as well as my wheels? |

Garwood is one of the sources that lines up with the Aug 58-Jul 59 1959 model year. |

I'd thought I'd share the results of the research I've done over the years with regard to the confusing model year situation with '58 and '59 Bugs. By no means authoritative or definitive, it's satisfied my need to know. This specifically applies to export models only.
My belief:
1958 Type 1 model year: 1 Aug 57 - 31 Jul 58
1959 Type 1 model year: 1 Aug 58 - 5 Aug 59
Main sources cited:
What Year Is It? (VWoA)
Progressive Refinements (VWAG)
Piet Olyslager Motor Manual, Volkswagen, Cars from 1954, Utility Vehicles from 1955, Karmann-Ghia from 1955 (The Sunday Times, 1961)
The start of the 1959 model year seems to be the most contentious with the start date of 1 Nov 58 being occasionally seen. Although I do not know for sure, one source for that date may be the "General Modifications" section of Progressive Refinements, which does list that date (chassis 2 149 029) as the start of the 1959 model year. It should be noted that other sections of "PR" would seem to contradict this, as is seen in the "Body" section where the new 1959 paint colors are listed for 31 Jul 58. It is also explicitly contradicted by "WYIT?".
It'd be great to get other people's take on this, especially if they have access to other sources. I give more weight to original VW material followed by contemporary (to the era) literature. More modern authors, especially those who don't cite their sources, are suspect (to me).

PR says that the tag was discontinued in Jan 59 (2 230 317) - export models, I assume. My car (11/1958) doesn't have one but its BC says it was delivered to Munster. |
