will a stewart warner gas heater for a 61-64' bug work on 58'-59' ? Anyone have pictures of various gas heater installs on their 58-59?

thanks

Well almost anything can be made to work. EG installing a type 4 engine in a beetle is real easy by cutting some of the rear body off.

Plus like radios, the S&W heater were for the most part a dealer installed accessory. So a VW that was traded back into a dealer sometimes got accessories added at that time to sweeten the used car deal. That way someone that could not afford a new VW with no frills, could get a used VW with the big buck options they desired. Also once someone paid off their VW, the next month they had that chunk of extra money that they could then go to the dealer to get the option/s installed. We have an early 1960s all transistor radio instructions for installing in an oval window beetle due to this affect.

Take a gander thru the "Heaters and Air Conditioning" that you can access thru the Technical button above on the right. Especially the 1960 manual.

We have a 1959 beetle that seems to be pretty original, that has an Eberspacher heater that was probably dealer installed.

does anyone have a good picture of what a Canadian standard interior would look like for a diamond grey beetle?
My birth certificate doesn't show interior color, and the car was gutted when i got it. Also, any good sources for the material?
Thanks, Conrad

This looks like a light bronze car. A diamond grey car would have had a red interior, so picture this in red with brown basket weave.

I am in the process of restoring a Euro rag (Oct 58 build). I have been cruising the classifieds for an Oct 58 voltage regulator ( or close to that date). I read a previous post on Bosch date codes
=======================================
This information has been posted on the site at various times but not in a specific thread so here is the information for reference and use in FAQs.

As many of you know, various parts used on Volkswagen and other vehicles were date-stamped by the original parts manufacturers. Due to production lead times, these date stamps typically preceded the manufacture date of the vehicle by 1 or more months.

Bosch
Parts are stamped with a 2 or 3-digit sequence.
From 1920-1963, the format was 1 or 2 numeric digits, then an alpha character.
The first 1 or 2 digits are the month, 1 through 12.
The last digit, a letter, is the year.
I was not used as they are too similar to the month digits.
For 1945-1963, O was also not used for the reason above.

From 1920-1944, the following apply:
A=1920 B=1921 C=1922 D=1923 E=1924 F=1925 G=1926 H=1927 J= 1928 K=1929 L=1930 M=1931 N=1932 O=1933 P=1934 Q=1935 R=1936 S=1937 T=1938 U=1939 V=1940 W=1941 X=1942 Y=1943 Z=1944

For 1945-1963, the following apply:
1945=A, 1946=B, 1947=C, 1948=D, 1949=E, 1950=F, 1951=G, 1952=H, 1953=J, 1954=K, 1955=L, 1956=M, 1957=N, 1958=P, 1959=Q, 1960=R, 1961=S, 1962=T, 1963=U

Example: 8M would be August, 1956:

For 1964-1969, Bosch used a 3-digit numbering scheme. The first digit is the last number of the year. The second 2 digits represent the month.
Example: 401 would be January, 1964.

For 1970-79, Bosch continued using a 3-digit numbering scheme but the months were numbered 21-32. In addition, 33-36 were used for the 4 quarterly periods. 33 = Jan.-March, 34 = Apr.-June, 35 = July-Sept., 36 = Oct.-Dec.
Examples:
021 = January, 1970
932 = December, 1979
436 = 4th quarter, Oct.-Dec., 1974

Bosch documents, thanks to hazetguy:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=675477

Bosch chart from 1960-onward, thanks to glutamodo:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=1167254

===================================
I do not know where to find the date stamps and am somewhat confused from the pictures some of the sellers are sending me. For example the picture below shows an "S31" which does not seem to match any of the codes listed in the article. So where can the date stamp be found and help in reading it. Please Help! Thanks

Picking up a 1958 Canadian Custom (standard) soon and its missing all of the fenders, fuel tank, ignition switch and bumpers.

I know whats correct for the bumpers, but what about for the fenders?

Fronts - are 1958 and 1959 the same? If I were to only find later fenders, would the 59 fenders be made correct with the addition of the wiring tube below the headlight bucket?

Rears - I believe these are all the same from 1956-1959 with the ribs - correct?

Fuel tank - is it the same from 1956-1960?

Ignition switch - same for 1958-1967??

Thanks for the help!

Most if not all of that info should be in the "Beetle FAQ and 1958-1967 Beetle Info available on TheSamba " at the top of the forum. Check there first. See that there is two threads about fenders. If you have more questions about fenders those those two threads are a great place to post more questions.

Also do try searches for info like this. For your ignition switch tried a search for "1959 ignition switch" checked the "titles only" box and only got one result. So tried reducing it down to just "ignition switch" and got these results:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?searc...=titleonly

About the ninth result looks promising. If you add the key code from there to the "ignition switch" search you can reduce the results way down from 3 pages.

Would the original fender from a 1961 Beetle match the contours which are correct for a 1959 beetle except for the wire tube?

I'm able to purchase wire tubes from klassic fab, so if the fender where the headlight bucket and where it meets the running board are the same, then I could make a pair work that I've found.

Thanks for the help!
