|
Thought I post up my 63 single cab that I purchased a few weeks ago. Here's the story.
I found this single cab about 8 years ago on a vacant lot with two other bugs and some parts near where I live. I started asking around to see who owned the bus and found out that the owner of the bus had passed away a few years back. I started searching the internet and our local assessors office for the family to see who owned the bus and see if they were interested in selling it. I finally made contact with the father about two years ago and was told that it was not for sale. I saved the guys phone number in my cell phone, figuring I would call him after a while and ask again. Well, long story short, I lost the cell phone.
I had to basically start over and find the owner again. With the help of a friend we found out that the owners family had a friend who lived near me and I was able to get that family members email address. I left an email and got a response from the sister. She told me that her cousin owned the bus and hoped I would get it so someone would do something with it. She gave my email address to her cousin and that same night I received an email from the cousin saying, "Hey, Im the owner of the VW truck, are you interested in buying it, if so call me?" I about crapped right then but decided to call the guy instead. I called the guy and found out that he had a title for the single cab but did not have a title for the two bugs. He also told me that he had the original key to the single cab as well. BONUS!
The guy told me that he wanted to sell the single cab as a package deal. There was a 69 bug and looks like an early 60's shell converted into a baja on the property as well and asked me to take them all, including all the parts, which I gladly did.
Anyways, that's the short version of it. After 8 years, it's finally mine. Here's some pics of it at home.

Thanks for the replies. To be honest with you, this is actually my first type 2 as well, so I will have a lot of questions building this thing. The plan is to run it patina style and bring it down a notch or two. I started on the exterior today. I used Skim's idea on his 59 single cab and used CLR for the rust and wet sanded with 600, 1000, and then 2000. I need to buy a buffer but am also considering Skim's idea on clear coating it since I have so much bare metal showing. Any suggestions?
BTW, is this suppose to be in the Readers Ride thread? |

Cool truck, and great story. Post up some pics of the paint progress! I wouldn't mind seeing it cleared, but a good coat of decent wax might do wonders.

I like the industrial-looking logo. Here's one I did on my truck:

That's sweet, the logo and your truck! Yeah, mine was a farm truck. One of the guys I work with named the El Ranchero! Told him I can't put that on the truck, don't want to look like Im TOTALLY following Skims idea.
BTW, I love the color of your bus! |

Do you have a post on your single cab, if not any progress on it? I'd like to see what your plans are and watch the progress your making.
Nevermind, I found it. Looking good!!! |

Yeah, I need to update my thread. I took it on a long test drive yesterday on the new tires. Ran great with a new fuel pump except fourth gear makes a screaming sound. Pretty annoying. Keep us up to date on the progress! |

So do you still have the spare tire hanger in the treasure chest? You should have two tabs hanging down on the driver's side and a threaded rod hanging down on the passenger side for the wishbone-looking hanger. This started with the '63 model year so you should have it.
Gotta love the dual treasure chest doors! _________________ Shawn

I do have the spare tire hanger, it's not in right now but I do have it. The passenger side still has the bolt and butterfly washer in place but the wishbone thing is out. The truck was pretty complete, except for the engine a couple minor things. I can tell an old farmer owned the truck, they never get rid of anything. Everything was in a box or in the treasure chest. |

Don't hate on what I do for a living, it just pays for the the VW addiction habit I have. I can't wait either to bring it down but I got a looong way to go, and I don't mean drive.
BTW I PM'd you yesterday on the LVVWC site. Hurry up and check it sucka! |
